I have a macOS Monterey 12.6.1 VM on an M1 Apple Silicon Mac, and it works fine. However, when attempting to update the VM to Monterey 12.6.7, the VM eventually gets to a point where it boots to a black screen. It's not obvious that it's actually running, except for the last line in parallels.log that indicates that it started successfully: 07-12 15:28:42.507 F /StateMachine:90229:101ddf/ VM state(unknown): initialized to VmStateNone 07-12 15:28:42.520 F /StateMachine:90229:101df6/ VM state(VmStateNone): enqueued 'VmLocalCmdStart'(20001) command 07-12 15:28:42.526 F /StateMachine:90229:101dfa/ VM state(VmStateNone): changed to VmStateInit 07-12 15:28:42.533 F /macvm:90229:101ddf/ VM Config: CPU : 4 07-12 15:28:42.533 F /macvm:90229:101ddf/ VM Config: RAM : 8589934592 07-12 15:28:42.547 F /StateMachine:90229:101df6/ VM state(VmStateInit): enqueued 'DspVmStateInfo'(3028) command 07-12 15:28:42.553 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:28:42.553 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:28:42.553 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:28:42.553 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:28:42.553 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:28:42.553 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:28:42.553 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:28:42.560 F /StateMachine:90229:101df6/ VM state(VmStateInit): enqueued 'DspEvtNotifyVm'(3014) command 07-12 15:28:42.562 F /StateMachine:90229:101df6/ VM state(VmStateInit): enqueued 'DspCmdVmGetNetworkSettings'(1060) command 07-12 15:28:42.575 F /prl_net:90229:101ddf/ [PrlNet]: adapter en0 is already present in the EthAdaptersList; 07-12 15:28:42.575 F /prl_net:90229:101ddf/ Existing: f8:4d:89:74:71:b2; New: 00:00:30:00:00:00 07-12 15:28:42.583 F /StateMachine:90229:101dfa/ VM state(VmStateInit): started 'VmTimerEverySecond' timer, delay 1000 ms, times to fire 0 07-12 15:28:42.583 F /StateMachine:90229:101dfa/ VM state(VmStateInit): changed to VmStateRunning 07-12 15:28:42.583 F /StateMachine:90229:101dfa/ VM state(VmStateRunning): completed current 'DspVmStateInfo'(3028) command with result 0x0 07-12 15:28:42.583 F /StateMachine:90229:101dfa/ VM state(VmStateRunning): completed current 'DspEvtNotifyVm'(3014) command with result 0x0 07-12 15:28:42.583 F /macvm:90229:101dfa/ Guest OS session command 'DspCmdVmGetNetworkSettings' was processed with error 0x80034001 'PRL_ERR_VM_EXEC_GUEST_TOOL_NOT_AVAILABLE' 07-12 15:28:42.583 F /StateMachine:90229:101dfa/ VM state(VmStateRunning): completed current 'DspCmdVmGetNetworkSettings'(1060) command with result 0x0 07-12 15:28:42.759 F /macvm:90229:101ddf/ macVM started successfully 07-12 15:28:52.557 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:29:02.559 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 07-12 15:29:12.564 F /macvm:90229:101e06/ sendRes=0 Is there something incompatible with Monterey 12.6.7 that prevents it from being able to be run as a VM? Or at least that prevents its display from working?
Just for the record, UTM (which also uses the Apple Virtual Machine Service) fails in exactly the same way. That is, 12.6.1 runs fine, but in the process of upgrading to 12.6.7, it eventually gets to a black screen with no indicator that it's actually running. So perhaps an Apple bug / limitation?
Hello, Indeed, it appears that the case requires deeper investigation, so we escalated it to the Development Team. Once there is a response from them - whether it is a request for additional information, a workaround or a permanent fix - we will let you know. We will get back to you as soon as we have an update. Thank you.
