This morning, I installed the LATEST build of Parallels 6. My Windows XP and Windows 7 virtual machines will not start now. The error that I receive is "Unable to connect Hard Disk 1". I checked the settings, and of the virtual machines are setup properly. This problem began after installing the latest build of Parallels. What's going on? According to Parallels, this new build was supposed to bring Lion compatibility, NOT break my vitual machines!

    Same problem.

Thought I would share what seemed to work for me. Same initial problems: upgraded to OS X Lion and Windows 7 parallels virtual machine would not start. Got the unable to connect to hard disk message. Uninstalled and reinstalled parallels 6 with no fix and started getting the error: unable to connect to service.

First Repair disk permissions then follow these steps 1 through 4

    Same problem here as well

I used Migration Wizard to transfer Parallels Desktop 6 (and the rest of my environment) to a new Macbook Air with Lion. All my virtual machines on the Lion machine get the "Unable to connect to Hard Disk 1" error. Also, new virtual machines get the same error.

I upgraded to the latest version of Parallels before the migration. I tried reinstalling Parallels on the Lion machine, but no change. I also tried ChesterW's fix, but no change either.

Here's the Parallels log from my Lion machine. It looks like Parallels under Lion thinks my virtual machine "has invalid format":

Load latest Parallels update - do uninstall and install new updated Parallels

I had same problem when I updated to Lion OSX - I was unable to open my Windows XP using Parallels 6 - same error message even when I downloaded latest updates from Parallels 6...I couldn't figure it out so my theory was the Lion OSX installation - it may have altered the path on my bios so simple solution is to uninstall Parallels 6 and install it again with new update...worked...good luck!

Any solution or update to this? The problem occurs after using Migration assistant to restore user file... thanks.
