I ran the software updater (14.04) and after restart I can no longer login to the GUI. The logs show the dreaded "We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry" messages, which indicates that gnome is very broken. Since I needed to upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu, I created a fresh (16.04) VM which worked fine until the first software update, after which the GUI is broken in the same manner. There is something in the software updates for 14.04 and 16.04 that is breaking UI functionality in the guest OS. I am running Parallels Version 11.2.0 (32581) on MacOS Mojave Thanks, Rick
