    Hello.

Well I am aware of that I have done something not very intelligent, but I can't really understand what went wrong. I'll first describe my background/problem and then a short version of my solution to the problem, leading to the "disaster".

Background: Running Parallels Desktop 8 on a Mac Retina OS X 10.8.4, 8 GB, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7.
Running Ubuntu TLS 12.04 in Parallels.

Problem: Ubuntu hard drive space of 64 GB was getting to small. Tried to increase via Parallel configure and resize the volume. Got the "common" (?) error "Unable to resize the last volume. The file system on that volume might be corrupted or not supported.". (How on earth can it be not supported? It was installed via Parallel.)

My proposed solution: Run fsck on the guest OS. Not possible when mounted. So I figured I should boot with a Live CD and do the fix from there.
I did read somewhere that one should configure Parallel for the guest OS to boot from CD/DVD, instead of the hard drive.
And also, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD stats that "The standard Ubuntu Cd can be used as a LiveCd as well as an installer.". So I downloaded and burned a DVD with Ubuntu 12.04.

Disaster: While booting from the live DVD, Parallels installed Ubuntu on my current old existing virtual machine. I should have got suspicious when I got the "Installing files" status message. After the installation, I had the same (to small) hard drive size, but with a large part that could be reclaimed, and my old data was lost.

Could someone please tell me what I did wrong?

Now, I also did read the notice about taking a backup before trying to resize the virtual hard drive, so I did take a backup of the most important stuff.

    Tnx!
