I had been sticking to Ubuntu 10 until they finally stopped updates. I used the update manager to upgrade to 11.04. The upgrade process itself went fine but when it tried to restart, it would hang, usually after the line:

    * Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation... [OK]

but sometimes I get the additional line:

    * Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [OK]

Is there any way for me to boot into terminal with parallels? I only see options of "Start" or "Safe-mode". I would like to be able to get to a prompt so I can try uninstalling Parallel Tools.

    I'm running Parallels 7.0.15094, OSX Lion 10.7.3 on a quad-core xeon.

    Thanks,
    Rob

Problem solved. Ctrl-Alt-Del in Safe-mode got me to the Grub screen where I could boot into recovery mode. I was able to remove Parallel Tools and reboot, then reinstall Parallel Tools. Everything now working fine.

My takeaway is that one should remove Parallel Tools before doing any major linux upgrades.
