When I try to upgrade Parallels Tools after installing the latest update to PD4, the installer hangs. I believe it hangs right at the end. The Status goes from Finalizing to blank, and it just sits there. I let it sit overnight, and still no progress beyond that.

I tried manually removing Tools based on some other threads I found in here where people have reported problems, and installing from scratch, but I'm still having the same problem. Again, I let it run overnight in case it was just slow. The PD4 patch went flawlessly. Nothing has changed with the configuration of my VM in some time. I'm running XP SP3 as the guest OS on a MBP with OS X 10.5.6 and 2GB memory. Parallels version is 4.0.3810.

I can run the installer again and attach a screenshot if needed.

I'm having the opposite issue. After upgrading the latest PD4 update, PD reports that Parallels Tools have not been installed. I install, reboot, same thing happens. It then starts searching for ethernet drivers etc.

Works fine in Boot Camp but useless now in Parallels. BTW I have Vista SP1.

I went into Boot Camp and removed Parallels Tools. Now whenever I try to install it in Parallels, it rolls back and the end and asks me to reboot. This goes on and and.

BTW I'm using Vista Business (legal copy). Latest Parallels.

On my iMac running PD 4.0 3810, I was getting the same issue where it kept reporting at the bottom lefthand corner that Parallels Tools has not been installed. Around the second week of January, I get a message saying there was a Parallels update and let it apply the update. The update starting reporting problems and then I noticed that the update it was applying was the same version I was already running 4.0 build 3810. My iMac has not been able to run Windows since and I have not had time to correct the problem (I am suspecting the boot.ini was corrupted since I am getting the same blue screen as I once did with PD 3.0 and that was the problem).

I did open ticket 670728. I was told to uninstall Parallels and reinstall the latest version, which I did. In response to my PIS or my KIS7.0 not working, I was told to use KIS7.0 since I had more time already paid for with it. I am now looking at this again because I can't either PIS or KIS7.0 to install, plus I am not satisfied my Windows system is operating correctly. It at least boots now, so I guess that is some comfort. I am about to try another reinstall of Parallels.

I don't know that I have my system back to 100% yet, but in order to fix my initial problem of not booting, I did a Web search of corrupted boot.ini and found "http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/repairbootini.htm" or something like it. It required my booting to the Windows installation CD and going into repair mode which gave me a limited command prompt. Afterward, my system would at least boot again, though at this point, I still don't have any AV since my PIS and KIS don't work and will not reinstall. Parallels has also told me to do a full uninstall of Parallels and reinstall with the latest version, which I have done at least twice.

Was this ever resolved? I'm having the same problem running Parallels 3 with Windows XP. It keeps telling me that I need to upgrade Parallels tools, and I follow instructions, but it never seems to complete properly.

Not that I have seen. I run PD4.0 on an iMac and a Macbook Pro and both give me that message as the botton of the PD window. My MBP is still running properly, though I am having issues with my iMac PD.
