I am on an academic network that uses DHCP. I registered Mac OS X on the network, so I have no problems with intranet or internet communications as long as I am running a connection from OS X. I use my Airport Extreme card for connecting to the network. However, I cannot get any connection to even to the internet while inside the VM (I'm running WinXP Pro) unless I use shared networking. While this gets me a live connection to the internet it also shuts me off from connecting to anything inside the network. This can be an annoyance as I use some specialized software in the VM and am not able to connect to networked printers or other machines inside the network for file transfers via FTP. If I attempt to do anything in bridged or host-only networking, the DHCP server triggers on the wireless card and does not allow registration nor can I unregister the card and re-register in WinXP (that'd be a bit of a kludge but I could live with it.) I have not tried making a physical connection from the Ethernet card to the wall (and it is not an ideal solution in any case.) Attempts to gimmick the MAC address through software on the Parallels network adapter (in the VM) have also failed. Does anyone have a solution?
I appear to have found the solution. By making a physical connection through the ethernet card and registering the Parallels network adapter I was able to get intranet access in the VM through bridged networking. Next, I changed the Parallels setup to bridged networking with the default adapter (not the ethernet connection) and can now get both internet and intranet access in the VM and Mac OS X simultaneously just through the wireless card and do not need a wired connection.
