Version 4 is absolutly terrible. Almost nothing works anymore. Can anyone explain why I have to download a 171mb file to remove this junk? Also you really have to search these forums to find that the uninstaller is hidden somewhere on the original DMG. This is an insult to your customers.
Let's be fair, PDM4 has a lot of issues, but what you refer is not one of those. It's not hidden in the .dmg, it's quite visible, besides, uninstallers in the the same .dmg as the installer is a common practice in OSX. It's a good practice to keep a repository of the programs you install, always keep the .dmgs.
It is common in OSX to not need an uninstaller at all, but if so most companys also have a seperate uninstaller on their site. You are right that I should keep the original DMG. Unfortunatly things are even worse. Version 3 is nowhere to be found anymore on this site and I tried installing a new version of WinXP in Parallels 4 but that failed during install. It's terrible that I now have to resort to warez sites to find the software that I bought.
Search the forums the links posted to builds 5626 and 5608 are all over it. Most software on OSX doesn't need an uninstaller because it's all contained in the .app, even so they leave .plist and folders under ~/Library/, other software that, for instance, need to deal directly with the hardware need to put files elsewhere, mainly .kexts, hence the need for uninstallers. This is to Parallels: What is completely WRONG is the fact that if I login to 'My Account' and navigate to 'My Registered Products', the links to the download of PDM3 take me to PDM4!!! Bloody fix this!
I understand that the builds are all over the forum. The thing is that it should be on the official download page, given all the problems with version 4. Unless Parallels starts giving away version 4 for free (which they obviously won't do) they've lost me as a customer. I understand that there can be a few problems with a major release, but this hardly qualifies as an alpha version.
Actually, I read this thread prior to installing Version 4... so I installed it with great dread... and lo and behold I did have problems... but in the final solution I have discovered that all my problems were of my own creation and they were fixed fairly easy... Don't forget to use Parallels Desktop Configure... it works wonders! The Oowf
Almost all the issues with converting Parallels Desktop 3.0 virtual machines into Parallels Desktop 4.0 virtual machines are caused either antiviral software installed or some particular configuration specificity . In order to perform upgrade smoothly, please uninstall Parallels Tools and any antiviral software before upgrading to Parallels Desktop 4.0 . Remember, there is always Parallels Technical Support which is ready to help you.
When you refer to removal of antiviral software - on the VM or in OSX. For me not a problem on the mac side but my build is linked to a corporate network and I don't have permissions to change the antiviral software there. No corporate suport as well as they don't recognize Parallels - I just use it because I am too hardheaded to change
In the VM. Run your Parallels Desktop 3 VM, uninstall the Tools/antiviruses/security software, install Parallels Desktop 4, upgrade your VM, install Parallels Internet Security, live happily ever after.
I tried both upgrading existing Windows versions and I did a complete clean install of WinXP. None of them worked.
On what step did you stuck, have you got any error messages? Any screenshots would be very appreciated.
