Switching retina mbp to external monitor

Running windows 7 guest on a retina mbp, video configured to run "best on retina". When I dock to an external monitor with the lid closed the app windows get magnified by a factor of 2. If I shutdown and restart the VM then it adapts properly to the external monitor. Is there a way to tell Parallels to adjust the video when docking without having to shutdown and restart? Thanks
