I'd like to see Solaris as a primary OS.

Right now I'm using VM Ware to run Solaris from within Windows from time to time, but I really would like to do it the other way around.

I'm sure there are lots of other people who would feel much more comfortable with Solaris as their primary OS :)

The effort to port it should be low, since you have a Linux version already, and I can get you in contact with the right people at Sun to help you past any roadblocks.

As soon as you have a version running on Solaris, I will switch to your product, and you will probably get a lot of other Sun engineers to buy your product too.

    cheers,
    /Martin

Try Solaris 10 X86 with Lxrun

Here's an option for you to try.

    http://developers.sun.com/solaris/articles/lxrun/index.html

Sun has touted for a long time that you can run un-modified Linux binaries on Solaris x86. This would be a good run through test.

However (opion coming) why would you want to run Solaris x86 as your primary OS? There is a major lack of support for devices and it's slow!

Now if you could run Solaris Sparc and emulate an x86 architecture that would be interesting, however that's what the PCi Cards are for. That would be a twist.... Running parallels inside a PCi Card running on a Sun Sparc Solaris system.... hmmm..... where's the old PCi card.....

    lxrun is not good enough!

I do 95% of my job on Solaris, and use Windows for a few Windows-only applications, so I prefer to run a virus/worm/spyware/malware susceptible OS as secondary! lxrun is a nice hack which isn't up to date. I am willing to pay real money for a product which delivers what I want!

I find Solaris far from being slow! You must be doing something wrong ;)

The driver part is true, but it is being fixed as I type:

It is a hack, but hey...

Yeah, lxrun is a hack but hey that was Sun's golden answer a year or so ago against Linux.... lol.

I understand I do 100% of my job on Solaris/Linux and use Windows for only gaming when I get a chance to do that. I was just curious about wanting Solaris x86 support. I'm not going to start a flame war over which OS is better blah blah... it's actually kinda neat to talk with someone who likes Solaris x86.

count me among the for sure many who work in Solaris and would like a port to Sol x86 .....

  6. Add me to the Solaris club. I've used most if not all of the free and commercial virtualization/emulation products out there. This one looks promising, especially for the cost. Driver support for Solaris is expanding quickly now that they opened it. Sun is working hard to get past all of their NDAs so they can release drivers. As for speed, Solaris 10 ain't your father's Solaris. I'm quite impressed with the performance.

a bit off topic but if you run Sol x86 you may also want to look at brandz for linux apps - I saw a demo of this a few weeks back and was quite impressed .... this was the janus project touted a year or so ago but quietly left out of Solaris 10 ....
