Retina settings on a non Retina Mac

Hmm, this is odd. I had a loaner MBP while mine was in the shop. The loaner was a newer Retina MBP, so I had the Retina settings tweaked to try to make Windows usable. I didn't set those back before I switched back to my repaired late 2011 MBP. Now the VMs are still enlarged, but the buttons to change the settings are gone. I expected to either still have the buttons, or have the setting default to a non retina option on a non Retina machine. Any hope for "fixing" this, or do I have to throw away the VM and start fresh?
