I am starting another thread here because I have read the related threads on this board (searched for "pstopdffilter") and none of the solutions work for me, so I am thinking the error number 13 may represent a different issue from the -31000 error posted elsewhere.

I have switched my wife from an aging Dell to a Mac Mini with Parallels 5 running off a Bootcamp partition. She is skeptical but interested in the tiny footprint of the Mini and so let me go ahead with the experiment. So far all is well except I can't find a way for her to be able to print to our Officejet 7210.

I set things up as directed with the generic HP Color Laserjet 8500 PS driver on the Windows side (though I initially deleted it by accident it was trivial to get it back). But whenever I try to print the Mac's print queue gets to "connecting to Printer" and throws "pstopdffilter/pstocupsraster failed with err number 13". I can print from the Mac side just fine, but the Mac driver seems to be choking on what Parallels is sending it.

Steps taken include re-installing Parallels Tools, applying the HP Printer Driver update through Software Update on the Mac side, resetting the Mac printing system, restarting the printer (several times), and a few other things I've found on the web but can't recall at the moment. A web search of the title text produced this post over on the VMware forum which contains a strange "fix" that I have not tried because I it seems to set up a fake printing queue that redirects to the real one, and the directions given apparently don't apply to Snow Leopard because the Print Queue interface doesn't contain one of the required components of the "fix":

Can anyone give me a lead to pursue this problem further? I have not had much success even finding my particular error on the web and have about run out of ideas. Only thing I can think to try now is to boot into Windows and install the real Officejet 7200 driver, though I suspect it won't work once Windows is virtualized again.

    Help!

    Configurations:
Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 2G RAM, 320GB HD
    Mac OS 10.6.3
Parallels Desktop 5.0.9344, Rev 558741: uses Bootcamp partition (Win XP SP3, all updates)
HP Officejet 7200 series sitting in another room on our home network

    solution

Silly me. All I had to do was install the Officejet 7200 series Windows driver. Since the printer is a network printer, and NOT directly connected to the Mac Mini, it seems the generic HP Color Laserjet 8500 PS connection actually won't work. One must install the printer driver in Windows as if the PC wasn't virtualized.

    I hope this helps someone...
