    Hi,

I successfully installed parallels workstation in Kubuntu 6.10 by applying the /bin/bash fix as posted here:

Now, when I run parallels, I get the following output:

    ASSERT: "next_x_time != CurrentTime" in ClipTools.cpp (139)

...and the it just hangs.... The gui dialog box doesn't pop up.

Does anyone have any clue as to what the problem is and how I might fix it?

    Thanks!

Are you running with sudo, or just clicking on the parallels icon that is added to the menu bar?

I tried using the menu bar icon and it took a billion years for it to launch, only to blow because the icon doesn't run with sudo. I then added sudo to the properties, but it still didn't launch.

To launch Parallels I just go to the terminal window and type sudo parallels. While I do get a couple of error msgs, not the long laundry list like you did, it still launches with no issues that I'm aware of.

BTW: I'm running Dapper Drake 6.60.10. I'm assuming you're running Edgy Eft when you say 6.10??

    Thanks for replying Robertjm.

I've attempted running with sudo, kdesu, and from the parallels icon. I get the above mentioned "laundry list" of errors every time. I've seen from time to time messages similar to

X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3
    Major opcode: 18
    Minor opcode: 0
    Resource id: 0x2e0000d

before when running KDE/Gnome/X applications from the command line, but never anything like ASSERT: "next_x_time != CurrentTime" in ClipTools.cpp (139)....

And yes, I am running Edgy Eft on a dual Xeon Dell workstation (if that helps any).

Out of curiosity, are you running Xinerama/multiple monitors? I'm getting an identical laundry list to yours, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's caused by Parallels' inability to deal with too much desktop real-estate.

I'm running PCLinuxOS 2007 - but the similarity in error messages leads me to thinking that the errors aren't caused by OS as much as configuration.

Of course...I'm no Linux God either, so I could very easily be wrong :)

Yes, in fact I am using nvidia's TwinView dual-monitor stuff, and I'll bet you're right. Strange that this problem wouldn't have been addressed previously...or has it? I take it Roknrol, that you haven't found a fix for this problem?

Nope - not yet, although I'll probably have some time today to fiddle with it. I'm doubting that there are commandline options available for Parallels, although I'll see what I can dig up.

Out of curiosity, with your desktop placement do you have any monitors running at a negative placement? I have four monitors - one of which is is left of my primary, and the another above my primary. I'm wondering if Parallels may be having a problem mapping negative x/y coords.

Did you have to force the RPM to install or was it "clean"?

Hrm...I'll play around and let everyone know if I discover anything - as I said, I'm no Linux Guru so any additional help would be welcome!

(It needs to be said - running the Beta release of PCLinuxOS and Parallels 2.1 worked fine, even with the multiple monitors. I have since tried both 2.1 and 2.2 to no avail, though.)

Just a quick update - I have managed to fix *nothing* yet. As with all things Linux I stumbled across a completely different problem that was slowing my machine down and got sidetracked ;)

Tonight after work I plan on removing 3 of my monitors and trying Parallels with only one screen. It's a big PITA, but since we aren't getting much support here I've gotta try something.

If anyone knows something about this, PLEASE post and let us know...even if you're just having the same problem. Finding the similarities between our systems could be integral to determining what the problem is (and how to correct it)!!!

Ok, apparently the multiple monitors IS the problem.

I reduced my number of screens to a grand total of 1 and Parallels runs with ZERO errors from a commandline. I have not...played with it much. I don't know if there are other problems that will arise, however I will keep everyone updated on my discoveries.

I will be adding one monitor at a time, noting what causes the problems, and what fixes them (if I'm able).

Incidentally - if anyone running multiple monitors has had problems with Beryl as well, send me a PM - I'll be troubleshooting that at the same time.

I didn't get much further on things last night - Beryl ended up messing it up for quite awhile :)

What I did determine is that it may not be a monitor to the left or above the 0,0 position - it may be having more than one video card that's messing it up. I tested it with one card (dual-head) and everything worked fine. I leapt into all four monitors (with some judicious rearranging) and it crashed. Tried it with three monitors and it crashed. Tonight when I get home I'm going to try it with one monitor on each card and see where things sit.

Am I talking to myself here?!?!?

Ok, I've determined a bit more.

It seems that Parallels has a hard time dealing with two video cards at the same time. I can run Parallels on either card if the other card isn't being used without any problems. If I try to use both cards (one monitor each), I get the "BadWindow" errors.

I'm going to continue fiddling with things, but I'm running out of ideas.

Is it possible that someone from Parallels can comment or offer suggestions?!?

I just submitted a support request regarding the multiple video cards. Anyone got odds on a response before Parallels v. 2.5?

    (Solved!)

I have finally found a resolution to this issue - this is due in no small part to the fantastic Support that I have recieved from Parallels.

VMWare runs fine with multiple video cards and multiple monitors. A big "Thanks" goes out to the staff here at Parallels that assisted my decision by not replying to emails, posts, requests, and pleads - Thanks!
