I'm using Parallels Desktop 6 and an installation of Snow Leopard Server. I also have VMs of Windows XP and Ubuntu linux. If I start PD6 with the dock icon, then open SL Server from the VM list window, the VM is almost unusably slow. As an illustration, I sometimes use it to play the best solitaire game I ever found, and if opened this way the cards can't even animate flipping over. BUT, if I open an alias to the VM in ~/Library/Parallels/ this doesn't happen and game play is as snappy as in an un-emulated system. Is it possible the opening of Parallels and the VM list is somehow loading something of each into memory and stopping the one I want to have open performing as it should, and that this doesn't happen if I go directly to opening the required VM?

Run Activity Monitor.app. How many processes named "prl_vm_app" do you see?
