Whenever I'm in parallels and shutdown an instance of windows xp parallels locks up and locks system resources. Eventually this causes gutsy to completely lockup (mouse and keyboard don't work) I've let it sit for an hour and have it still be locked up. I've tried using killall parallels and killall parallels-linux in the console and it just idles and does nothing. This forces a hard reboot (reset button) and almost every time causes the need for an fsck to be run because of corrupted inodes. I was wondering if there is any advice anyone can give me to get to the root of the problem. By the way i'm running Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.

    Same problem in Debian testing

No solution, but I can tell you the problem isn't limited to Ubuntu. Debian testing with kernel 2.6.22 is affected. I was surprised to find build 2204 would compile and run on this kernel, things went sour when I tried to suspend my VM (Windows XP sp2).

So, runs fine but when I try to suspend it goes till about 94% done then locks up the machine. Can't kill parallels when this happens, so need to do a hard reboot - not good. My VM was also broken after this - reverted to a backup. This happened 3 times, it's not a one off. I haven't tried to shutdown the vm as opposed to suspend it yet.

    Here's what I found in the kernel.log:

    one more thing

everything works normally on kernel 2.6.18, it's only when I boot with 2.6.22 that I can't suspend, so it definitely seems to be something in the 2.6.22 kernel that causes problems.

    Lockup on Suspend, not shutdown

Just tried shutting down windows in the VM, as opposed to having parallels suspend the VM. And that worked fine, so for now a workaround is to shutdown each time and not suspend the VM.

Loss of a nice feature though :(

Still, probably wastes less time than rebooting with kernel 2.6.18 just to use parallels ;)

Actually my issue happens with shutdown. Appears to actually be a hardware issue (bad ram module) Thanks for the info though.

    Any suggestions for testing memory?

    Debian testing

I'm running Debian testing not ubuntu. I did run memtest - not at boot, so it won't have tested all the memory, but I found no problems. And everything else is fine. For me this is really specific to suspending a virtual machine whilst using kernel 2.6.22, I can shutdown a vm on 2.6.22 though, and I can suspend and shutdown on 2.6.18. Seems like an incompatability between parallels build 2204 and the debian 2.6.22 kernel to me.

Guaranteed lock up when guest OS is running

I was running parallels on Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty)[as host] without issue running an XP instance as a guest.

I bravely upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) only to find parallels would lock up the entire system.. guest and host! No particular behaviour seemed to trigger the lock up, it would do it whenever the guest OS was up and running!

I upgraded to parallels build 2204 however the problem still existed.

I did a fresh install of 7.10 and then installed parallels 2204. Same problem, system totally locked up requiring a hard reboot.

I've now gone back to 7.04 with parallels 2204 and everything is working perfectly again.. except for the fact I'm back where I started!!! ;)

    So something funny going on....

Known Issue - Not in Knowledge Base

I had the same issue, trying to install WinXP as the guest OS on Kubuntu 7.10, about 80% way through the install I kept getting a kernel panic and complete freeze. The guy who sits next to me had the same problem (same OS and Parallels build). This is the response from support:

"Unfortunately Parallels Workstation does not support the new Ubuntus
kernels. Parallels Developers are working on this problem. The only
suggestion I can give is to install Ubuntu with an old kernel."

When asking how long until a new build was out I got this:

"Unfortunately I do not know when this release will be.
Please keep an eye on the news on Parallels web site."

I'm just slightly irked because this is the first time I've used Parallels. I bought it because a lot of my coworkers have had a lot of success with it. I paid for it almost a month ago, and I'm still not able to use it. Downgrading my OS is not a feasible option.

Ya its definitely not playing friendly with the kernel. It causes all kinds of file system errors. if i run an fsck on startup after using parallels on desktop (killing it to end the windows session) or my laptop i get inode errors. very very bad. And its not a memory issue on my machine i fixed that and it still a crap fest.

I'm running Debian testing with self-compiled 2.6.22.14 kernel and parallels doesn't lock up during suspending or shtudown. There must be a patch or config in your kernel that might conflict with parallels. Can you do a diff in the config files between 2.6.18, 2.6.21, (non-locking kernels) and 2.6.22 (locking kernel)? I think a feature in 2.6.22 was activated that the earlier kernels didn't have is causing the lockups.

    I'm running parallels 2204 btw.

    Hello all,

Adrinux, please try decreasing the amount of memory allocated to Parallels and your Guest OS:

    1. In Workstation menu click Edit -> Preferences. Set the RAM size 350 MB approximately.
    2. Launch your VM but do not start Windows. In Configuration Editor - Memory set RAM size 250 MB or less (please try different levels).

In Options of Configuration Editor - VM Flags set Acceleration level to Normal.
    Start your Guest OS.

    Waiting for the feedback.

    Best regards,
    Xenos

    Hi Xenos,

I tried lowering the memory to 256MB and also put the acceleration in 'normal'. My system (Debian/Sid with a custom 2.6.22 kernel) froze shortly after I started the VM. I didn't even make it to the login screen.

    Best Regards,

    Hello Raghos,

Could you let me know the Workstation build you are using and your processor type?

Please enable Virtualization Support in the Workstation Configuration (Options -> Advanced).

    Hi Xenos,

Sorry for the late response: I've upgraded to 2.6.23, reconfigured parallels with the patch that is going around, and now it is not freezing anymore. Although I don't have network access from the VM anymore.

    Oh well.

    Hi Macaby,

When you have the VM loaded (in the main parallels window) you'll see 'Acceleration' listed. If you either click on that link, or edit the VM options, you'll be able to change the acceleration option.

    Cheers.

    raghos,

If you're talking about the pop-up Parallels window that in my case, says Microsoft Windows Vista, the options I see are...

    Memory 1024
    Floppy Disk
    Hard Disk 1
    CD/DVD-ROM 1
    Network Adapter 1; Shared networking
    Sound
    USB Controller

I also don't see anything about acceleration in the pulldown Parallels menu at the top of the screen.

    Hi Macaby,

Ok, those options are above the options you list. I'm guessing some of these options might be OS-specific, and 'acceleration' is not available for Vista (I'm running XP as guest).

    Cheers.
