I am working with a Redhat linux virtual machine. Up until very recently, it took up about 20GB. Now it is at over 30, suddenly. The only reason I can think of is that I recently did some resource intensive processing of about 7GB of text files.

Regardless, I am no longer doing this processing, and linux reports my disk usage at around 18GB. The problem is, Parallels is still saying and using over 30GB, even after using the compacter. This is a problem, since I don't have much disk space in my laptop.

    I'd appreciate any advice.

It is possible for a file system to be smaller than the volume it is in. If you grow the volume but don't change the size of the file system there will be differences depending on how you look at it. OS X sees the size of the vm, Linux sees the size of the file system.
