I'm running Parallels/Vista on my MacBook Pro. All new set up purchased in Feb this year. All has worked well until last night. For internet I use either Airport with a wireless router and satellite at home or an AT&T USB modem while traveling. Have had no problems with either and have been on the internet just fine with both systems while running Parallels/Vista until last evening.

The USB modem won't connect to the internet and I get an error message telling me to "check my settings." When I open my Network settings page, I see two "new" connections, and at the top of the page I am told that I am "connected" (but I'm not), and that "Parallels Shared Networking Adapter is currently active and has the IP address 10.211.55.2." There is a second message that shows when I click on the second Parallels connection, and it says "Parallels Host-Only Networking Adapter is currently active and has the IP address 10.37.129.2."

I've tried multiple times to delete these "connections" but they reappear with every restart of the computer. They are there even if Parallels isn't open. It's as if the computer thinks it's already connected to the internet, and won't let the USB connect.

I visited the Genius Bar today and was told it was probably a modem problem, then I visited the AT&T store and was told it "might" be a modem problem but it might be a software problem too.

Before I send off for a new USB modem, I just wanted to ask here if these messages/settings are normal, and why would they say I'm connected when I'm not?

Thanks to anyone who can help with this.

What you see is most probably Parallels network adapters, which are used to provide network connection to the virtual machine with, corresponding, Shared networking and Host-Only network mode.
If the USB modem does not work on the Mac side as well - this might be a problem with either a modem or it's configuration, these network adapters should not interfere with it, just as any other network adapter which might be present.
If the USB modem does not work only in virtual machine, I would suggest to try Bridged ethernet network mode, that way virtual machine would aquire IP address as if it was a separate computer on a network.
The messages themself are fine, in both modes the IP addresses should look exactly like that.
