There is a bug in Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5608 with the way Parallels and Spaces interact when starting Guest OS applications. When you replicate this bug, you will see that when trying to open an application in a certain space, Parallels will jump to a space where there's other Parallels Guest OS applications open.

    My setup:
    OS X Leopard 10.5.4
    Spaces enabled with 4 spaces.
"When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application" ON. This setting makes it so that when I'm in another space and I click on the Dock icon of an application in another space it takes me to that space instead of doing nothing.
    Parallels Build 5608 - Coherence Mode - XP SP2

    Replicate the Problem:
    1. Go to Space 1 - Open Notepad from Parallels
    2. Go to Space 3 - Open Excel 2007 from Spotlight

The behavior will be that Excel will Open in Space 1 instead of Space 3!
When doing this with an native XP application (say Paint instead of Excel 2007), Parallels will switch to Space 1 but the application will actually open in Space 3, requiring me to manually switch to Space 3 to see the application.
When closing the application in Space 3, it will jump back to Space 1.

I will test situation you described
but "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application" ON.
is a bit unrelated to problem

Thanks John. I was describing the exact settings so others can duplicate the issue. The problem happens no matter how that setting is checked in System Preferences. I also have disabled the "Bring notification windows to front" in the Coherence VM settings. The switching spaces issue is related to opening and closing multiple applications in Coherence rather than when there's notifications inside the Guest OS.

I am not able to reproduce problem.
    I tried builds from 5584 to 5608
Calculator in Space 1, switching to Space 3 running Excel 2007
Excel is opening in Space 3

I completely uninstalled Parallels 3.0 5608, fixed Disk permissions, deleted the kernel extensions and restarted several times. I reinstalled Parallels 3.0 5608 and the Parallels Tools inside the VM, however the issue still exists.

In Coherence, I open Notepad in Space 3, then I open while in Space 2 an Excel using a .XLS file on the Desktop. Parallels switches to Space 3 where Notepad is, but Excel opens in Space 2. It gets more fun with more Windows Apps open in different OS X Spaces. This is certainly a Coherence problem that has to be investigated and fixed!

The issue is possibly related to this post: http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=18641

I should note that my Virtual Machine is a machine converted from VMWare. I will test it with a brand new XP install to see if the problem could be narrowed down to the convertion.
