Hi We use OpenAFS as our network file system, and after updating from OpenAFS 1.4.2 for OS X 10.4 I have been having machine crashes while running XP and vista vms. I have built the OpenAFS 1.4.3 package from source and used both the stock 1.4.4 package and a locally repackaged version. my Parallels build 3188 works fine with no OpenAFS or with OpenAFS 1.4.2 running my windows vms. I am running OSX 10.4.9 and my machine a core2 duo iMac 2.16GHZ with 2G of memory and is fully updated. I have crash dumps if that is of use to anyone.
openafs has a bug system... have you considered submitting the bugs? the thing which would be the most useful would be a kernel backtrace.
Sorry no I had not, But I will do so. I had posted a querry on port darwin and had no comments about it. The only backtraces I have are of Parallels falling over which may not bee too much use to openafs. e.g. Fri May 25 13:38:46 2007 panic(cpu 1 caller 0x00141505): zalloc: "kalloc.4096" (116884 elements) retry fail 3 Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack) 0x25293978 : 0x128d08 (0x3cb134 0x2529399c 0x131de5 0x0) 0x252939b8 : 0x141505 (0x3cbe40 0x3cb40c 0x1c894 0x3) 0x25293a18 : 0x12d97d (0x1832a30 0x1 0x0 0x10) 0x25293a48 : 0x12d99c (0x1000 0x1 0x25293a88 0xa510ca) 0x25293a68 : 0x37faf8 (0x1000 0x1 0x0 0x0) 0x25293a88 : 0xa51572 (0x1000 0x63216e75 0x0 0x6d616769) 0x25293ac8 : 0xa5449f (0x3bd30000 0x400 0x0 0x6c5f7f) 0x25293b18 : 0xa53476 (0x4ca0984 0x18 0x0 0x199193) 0x25293bd8 : 0xa53862 (0x4ca0984 0x25293eb8 0x18 0x1832c68) 0x25293d38 : 0xa508c7 (0x4ca0984 0xc0185401 0x25293eb8 0x0) 0x25293d68 : 0x1f05d7 (0xd000000 0xc0185401 0x25293eb8 0x81) 0x25293da8 : 0x1e7411 (0x25293dd0 0x297 0x25293e08 0x45d89c4) 0x25293e08 : 0x1df212 (0x4ac1dec 0xc0185401 0x25293eb8 0x81) 0x25293e58 : 0x331c4c (0x4569c40 0xc0185401 0x25293eb8 0x45d89c4) 0x25293e88 : 0x34ffa8 (0x4569c40 0xc0185401 0x25293eb8 0x45d89c4) 0x25293f58 : 0x379e23 (0x45d89c4 0x4734848 0x473488c 0x0) Backtrace continues... This looks very familiar. I was having many problems with Parallels (.latest) freezing up my entire Mac (MacBook Pro, Mac OS X 10.4.9) randomly, maybe on the average of once every two hours but very randomly, and suddenly a few weeks ago, it was working like a charm. One change I had made but had forgotten about was to take /Library/StartupItems/OpenAFS and move it to a directory I'd made myself for software I don't usually use -- /Library/StartupItems.NOTUSED/OpenAFS . Yesterday I needed OpenAFS for the first time in a while, started it up (sudo /Library/StartupItems.NOTUSED/OpenAFS/OpenAFS start), got into Parallels to update a Windows file with some info, and Windows was acting very unresponsive (taking 30 seconds to react to keypresses or even CTRL+ALT+DEL), and suddenly my entire Mac froze for the first time in weeks. I rebooted, brought up OpenAFS again, used it, did the (sudo /Library.../OpenAFS stop), started up Parallels, went to lunch, came back and frozen solid again. The storal of the mory is ... don't bring up OpenAFS and then try to use Parallels without rebooting your Mac in between. Here's the latest crash log when I brought up the Mac after the last freeze... ---- panic(cpu 1 caller 0x00141505): zalloc: "kalloc.4096" (115756 elements) retry fail 3 Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack) 0x250cb978 : 0x128d08 (0x3cb134 0x250cb99c 0x131de5 0x0) 0x250cb9b8 : 0x141505 (0x3cbe40 0x3cb40c 0x1c42c 0x3) 0x250cba18 : 0x12d97d (0x1656a30 0x1 0x0 0x10) 0x250cba48 : 0x12d99c (0x1000 0x1 0x250cba88 0x9ca0ca) 0x250cba68 : 0x37faf8 (0x1000 0x1 0x0 0x0) 0x250cba88 : 0x9ca572 (0x1000 0x63216e75 0x0 0x6d616769) 0x250cbac8 : 0x9cd49f (0x38f80000 0x400 0x0 0x737f7f) 0x250cbb18 : 0x9cc476 (0x4c1d304 0x18 0x200000 0x199193) 0x250cbbd8 : 0x9cc862 (0x4c1d304 0x250cbeb8 0x18 0x1656c68) 0x250cbd38 : 0x9c98c7 (0x4c1d304 0xc0185401 0x250cbeb8 0x0) 0x250cbd68 : 0x1f05d7 (0xd000000 0xc0185401 0x250cbeb8 0x81) 0x250cbda8 : 0x1e7411 (0x250cbdd0 0x297 0x250cbe08 0x4c5fdac) 0x250cbe08 : 0x1df212 (0x447cb58 0xc0185401 0x250cbeb8 0x81) 0x250cbe58 : 0x331c4c (0x401b490 0xc0185401 0x250cbeb8 0x4c5fdac) 0x250cbe88 : 0x34ffa8 (0x401b490 0xc0185401 0x250cbeb8 0x4c5fdac) 0x250cbf58 : 0x379e23 (0x4c5fdac 0x4529ce8 0x4529d2c 0x0) Backtrace continues...
