On students, Slackware and FreeBSD

Been using Parallels Desktop for a brief period on my first generation MBP and really liking it!

Just one question; I'm using FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE and Slackware Linux 11.0 (2.6.18 kernel) but I can't seem to get the mouse detected in the latter. In the FreeBSD installer I let the mouse daemon "auto-detect" and the mouse works fine, but not on Slack. Does Parallels emulate a PS/2 style mouse?

Perhaps I should have put this on another thread, but also was wondering if anyone knows if Parallels have a student price or discount; a quick Google, FAQ and Forum search didn't get me anywhere. I'd love to use Parallels for my university work (programming on various *NIX's), but the $79.00 registration fee in Singapore or Australian dollars is a bit too steep for me right now!

Quick update: I tried uncommenting the mouse "Option Protocol Auto" instead of the "Option Protocol PS/2" line in /etc/x11/xorg.conf but mouse still does not respond when I launch X. There's probably something obvious I'm doing wrong, but I can't think what it is! :(
