This feels like my last burst of energy on this subject or unfortunately with this product. I bought the original Parallels in 2007 and it worked fine. In November 2008 I felt compelled to upgrade to Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac as I was being constantly bombarded with prompts to do so. From that moment on my internet connection between Parallels and my Intel iMac has not worked - rendering my Windows environment on my Mac redundant and pushing me back to using my old Dell.

That is until I received an application the other day that I will need to use on a regular basis in the PC environment and I thought I would have one last bash at getting my Parallels to work for me. Well a week later, trying to trawl the help forums looking for a solution, a $30 Support fee, over 5 hours of long conversations with Tech support, the promise of further information being sent to me via email (and nothing), I am here without a solution to my problem and without the slightest prospect of my problem ever being resolved. So what do I want - I want to have a quick rant about how rubbish things really are and how fewer and fewer companies seem to be taking responsibility for their products and their shortfalls and to cap it all charging clients more to sort out what should be straight forward problems at worst but in fact seem to be none working products. The Tech support I received was repetitive and limited as no solution was forthcoming. If anybody else feels they might have a solution to this problem please feel free to share it as I may just have 30 minutes left to try one last ditch attempt. But unless you have some real insight I really wouldn't waste your energy.

    ipconfig /release

    Ping yahoo.com
    Packets = 4 sent, 4 received, 0 lost
    Ping google.com

    Uninstalled Parellel Tools and reinstalled

All to no avail - Good luck

I have the same problem - cannot connect to the internet.

I'm using Parallels 3 on Mac OS X, and using Windows XP in Parallels. I have had internet access in Parallels for months and suddenly it stopped working this week.

ipconfig /all shows me that my IP is 169... so I tried and renew but keep on getting the error, "unable to contact your DHCP server."

Does anyone have any tips or ideas to solve this? Thanks so much!

Have I understood right that Internet is working and you can open for example www.google.com from the Mozilla at Windows? And what is not working - is connection between Mac Host and Windows guest?

    2all: I cann't help with Parallels 3.0, sorry

Why can't you help Parallels 3.0? Because you don't have the knowledge, or because it's an old version?

I don't have knowledge, really. I've entered to Parallels at the moment of starting Parallels 4.0

    Hi Elric,

Thank you for your reply. I am able to ping ip addresses but neither Firefox or Explorere will show web pages. For instance in Explorer I get:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
    Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
    The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address. (www.bbc.co.uk - i think not)

I then click on Diagnose problem and it says "windows did not detect any problems..." - see diagnostic log below:
Last diagnostic run time: 04/27/09 16:16:02 HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic
    HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity
info HTTP: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com.
info FTP (Passive): Successfully connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
info HTTPS: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com

I am sure this is fantastically basic for some PC techy and would have liked to think this was super obvious for the Parallels team. But it still doesn't want to play ball. All suggestions welcome.

    James...

    Hi,

Actually, the problem is not so obvious!
I'm interested whether you can open www.microsoft.com,
if you can't, it is interesting to know whether it is pingable,
then (assuming that it is pingable), in cmd.exe (Start->run->"cmd.exe") whether command
"telnet www.microsoft.com 80" works. It should report something like
If telnet works, then the reason should be either firewall or even virus (although I've not heard that Firefox can be affected by viruses)..

Hi, Elric. I have the same problem today.

I have laptop MAC running PD 4 (installed a few days ago and activated on Tuesday with a paid key) with Windows XP Home as guess OS. I had internet connectivity at home (via wireless) yesterday. Right now at office, I have wired connection on MAc, but XP does not have any connectivity. telnet failed. connection status says 'limited or no connectivity'. ipconfig gave IP 169.254.49.254, subnet 255.255.0.0 and blank Default Gateway. On MAC 2 Parallel Shared Networking Adapters, both are active, one IP is 10.211.55.22 and other is 10.37.129.2, both subnet is 255.255.0.0, and router and DNS are blank.

    Any solution for this?

strange, in PD configure for the affected VM, network was bridged, changing that to shared works. I don't remember I had it in bridged mode, but I did not change some configurations because auto snapshot did not work so I thought I need to reconfigure it.

XP VM works but new Win7 RC1 VM won't connect to internet

Curious that my conversion from Parallels 3.0 WinXP works fine on internet (Firefox), but when I loaded Win7 RC1 and tried to start IE8 it says says after diagnosing problem, "Install a driver.....Window did not detect a properly installed network adapter..."

Configure is Network Adapter 1/Enabled/Connected/Bridged Ethernet/Default Adapter (same as with working XP VM), however it doesn't work at all with RC1. Also only have one VM started to eliminate conflicts.

    Hi,
Does the Windows7 VM have Parallels Tools installed? The issue seems to be due to missing tools

    Solved

Solved the no Internet Connect by installing Parallel Tools. Evidently it installed either automatically or instantly when I upgraded 3.0 for XP. I had tried to install Parallel Tools earlier when workiing with RC1, but evidently did not wait long enough for it to take place. Tip came from a friend on the phone. He determined that Tools were not loaded by asking about the very bottom right Parallels menu item. That icon had a small red circle before Tools were installed and none after.

I'm good to go. Now how to get all the Mac Desktop stuff off the Windows desktop.

This worked for me using leopard 10.5.6 and paralllels 4 default everything with windows xp home installed.

System preferences -> Sharing -> Internet Sharing

Make sure your internet sharing is turned on. You want to share the connection of whatever your mac is connecting to the internet though. ie. 'Share your connection from: Airport'
    'to computer using: Ethernet'

  15. Internet connection fails + Parallels Tools doesn't install

I've bought Parallels a few days ago. It all worked fine until I had an update from you. Everything works fine except the internet connection. I've tried to install Parallels Tools again but it keeps on freezing when installing. Please advice!

Please create a support ticket at http://www.parallels.com/support/desktop/request/ and make a note in the ticket that tools are freezing at install

If you could attach the file c:\windows\temp\parallels-tools-install.log to the ticket, it would be great. Unfortunately, I'm not a support-man and don't know exactly how to take out them from VM. afaik it can be done using /Application/Parallels/Parallels Explorer; the more detailed instruction could be provided (if it will be required) by support-team

I have been battling this issue ever since I purchased the software. Maybe one or two times in five months have i been able to use the internet in my virtual machine in xp. At the same time i am trying to access the internet in Parallels, I am connected in OSX and it is lightning fast. Whether I am at home or school, it doesnt matter, the same issue occurs.

I have turned internet sharing on, yet everytime i look at my system preferences right after i turn it on, it is off.

I am about fed up with the parallels software because of this.

One More "Fix" for the list

After almost a year of trouble-free experience with Parallels I could not have imagined that I would become a member of such a frustrated and disillusioned club. For me, it's only been a week of hell, but I've lost several clumps of hair. I finally stumbled on what appears to be a solution for me (and hopefully for some of you guys too).

I discovered that "Work Offline" was inexplicably checked in Explorer. I unchecked it, and now all seems to be fine. I'm still holding my breath, but I know the first thing I'm going to look for if my Parallels internet drops again.

Parallels guys- you might want to check out Tools to see if it has a mischievous streak. I know I didn't do it. I have not even looked at "Work Offline" since I was on dial-up sometime in the last century.
