    Hi,

I am a first time Parallels user, and I am a little bit confused with the networking options.

What I am trying to achieve is to set up a virtual Widows XP under which I intend to run Oracle 11g & Oracle Application Server. This setup has to be good in various environments (ie: to be used with many different customers DHCP servers (not at the same time, obviously)), and, when no DHCP servers are available, on its own.
Both the rdbms and the application server require a static IP to be setup correctly. Under Win XP, you usually achieve this by adding MS loopback adapter.
Furthermore, I would like to be able to access the network (to download updates and such) from the virtualized XP.
And, last but not least, the application server running on the virtual OS should be accessible externally.

    My questions are:
    - Should I use "Bridged ethernet" or "Host only"?
    - Is there a way to assign a static IP to a virtualized OS network interface (thus rendering the loopback adapter unnecessary)?

    Thank you for your help,

    Hello,

I suppose you better use Bridged ethernet because Host-only connection will only let the VM connect with the Mac.
As for the static IP for the Guest OS you can do the following:
please, contact your local network administrator to check if your network configuration supports automatic DHCP assignment, and what static IP address can be assigned to your VM on the network. Then, open your VM, Start->Control Panel->Network Connections->Local Area Connection->Right-click->General Tab->choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)->Properties and set your static IP for "Use the following IP address". make sure that you have got all other settings from your provider/administrator.

    Best regards,
    Alicia.
