Hello, I am trying to upgrade to newest version of parallels but cannot find out some important details before I attempt this. I want to make sure that I do this right since all my financial data is in Quicken which I run in windows via paralllels. Currently I cannot access my shared folder, cd burner or jump drives so I cannot backup data before I attempt upgrade. I am hoping that this backup devices will run after I upgrade. When I upgrade will I have to reload windows and quicken? Will I loose my quicken data files? Does anyone have any tricks to at least access my shared folders to backup data. Quicken doesn't seem to acknowledge this folders when i try to backup to them while running quicken. Thanks for any help! Chriskes
Definitely back up before upgrading. There is a free product called SuperDuper! that will backup your Mac to an external firewire or USB drive. You will not lose your Windows installation or your Quicken installation by upgrading. (However, remember Murphy's Law and back up first.) To access your shared folders, follow the instructions in the manual for setting up the shared folders if you have not already done so. Make sure that Parallels Tools are installed. To find the shared folders from windows, (They are not where you think they would be) click on My Computer, then My Network Places, then Shared Folders with Windows XP on .psf. You should now see your shared folders.
I've updated Parallels through several versions and have never lost the Quicken program nor, more importantly, my Quicken data. Backing up your files is important whether or not you are upgrading Parallels.
