    Hi,

I currently have Parallels Desktop 10 operating on my Mac running Windows 8.1. I just updated my OS X to El Capitan, not knowing that my current version of Parallels wouldn't be supported at all, as a consequence I am now getting the 'The Boot Camp partition "/dev/disk0s4" used by Hard Disk 1 is missing.' error when I try to connect to my VM. According to http://kb.parallels.com/123072, the only solution is to upgrade to Parallels 11, which is frustrating.

I haven't got a recent Time Machine backup though so am considering spending money on the upgrade rather than downgrading my OS X to Yosemite. But as I am now a student I can purchase a new version of Parallels 11 which is cheaper than buying the upgrade key. My question is, would this be treated as an entirely new install rather than an upgrade, and therefore how can I ensure seamless integration of my boot camp partition?

If anyone has some advice that would be much appreciated! :)

    Hi Christine,
You can use either one, your vm's will remain unaffected, you will just need to open them in Parallels 11. You will not need to remove your old Parallels Desktop 10 install, Parallels 11 will do that. Just make sure Parallels 10 is closed, and DO NOT DELETE YOUR VM's. These are the install or upgrade instructions. It will work for both situations. Once you open your vm, Parallels tools should install automatically.

PS Making a copy of you vm is alway a good idea.

    Hello kat,

    Your help is appreciated here...

After many frustrating hours of attempting to upgrade my Win 7 Pro VM to Win 10, I ended up creating a new Windows 10 VM with a fresh install.
Is there any automated way to move the User Account & Apps from my Parallels VM Windows 7 to the new Parallels VM Windows 10?

Thanks in advance for any definitive answer.

    Hi Jerry
I believe you can share information between the two vm as long as the sharing option is selected in configuration, and both vm's are on. I think that Windows OS dose not permit the transfer of apps from one Virtual machine to another.

Thanks for your response Kat. I'll purchase the student licence tonight and see how I go!
