I'm trying to create a workstation for all my development needs. Parallels is quite promising, since I need to be able to run test servers, and such, but I need virtualization benefits to help save time. Bottom line, what is the maximum configuration supported for a parallels computer? For one, it seems that 4GB is max supported memory? What about processor? Can parallels support dual woodcrest processors (Like the Xeon 5148)? What about the drive controller? Is there any existing info on other supported/unsupported hardware? Is there a list of upcoming hardware support? Thanks, John
No replies on max hardware for parallels? Hi, I guess no one seems to know what the max supported configuration for parallels is. Perhaps this is an indication that I should stay away from this product? Thanks, John
Helpful? Hi, Not to seem snide, but was your post supposed to be helpful? If it wasn't clear from my previous post, I looked, and did not find any such information. John
. It is all there for the reading. Like the device support, the 4Gb max memory, single cpu, vt intergration, virtualized resources like video and such. Not that I'm particularly religious, but doesn't the saying go, "the lord helps those who help themselves". I let you know that all the info is available, all you had to do is read into the situation that "I need to help myself", and go do it. Your not being any help to anyone, including yourself, by thinking someone should just re-scribe it all here in this location for you. .
Extremely unhelpful? Hi, Thanks for bothering to reply, since you seem to be the only one. However, when someone says they looked and did not find, continuing the course of telling them the information is "out there" is rather a waste of time. I checked the FAQ, support, searched the forums, searched google, searched google groups, posted on this forum, posted on toms hardware guide forums, and could not find really anything other than basic info on the generally supported items. Infact, when you search these forums, only my own post results in a search for "woodcrest". When you search these forums, the supported hardware does not appear in any combination of words I type. When you look at the information on the website, the only obvious info is the MINIMUM supported hardware, not the maximum. If you read my post, you will also see I indicated that perhaps this information already existed. At no time did I ask someone to copy and paste the contents of such lists. A URL or other helpful directive tips could be useful. Telling someone that it's "out there" is not of any use at all. Google has over 1 billion web pages talking about cars alone. An answer like yours could use some work when anyone who bothers to remove the large chip from their shoulder can see I already spent some siginificant time looking for the information. Regarding the 4GB memory limit, the info on that was rather limited. I only saw that above 4GB there were issues, but I also saw some people seeming to have issues at 4GB. The specifics on this were rather scant. For example, is it a supported configuration to have a 64 bit linux + 8GB RAM, 4GB host, and 4GB for VMs? So far, I'm failing to find valuable information on using Parallels for anything above enthusiast level. If you only have posts to give like the prior two, perhaps additional posts from you are not necessary in this thread. John
. Will windows work with every piece of hardware known? Until someone, not ever Microsoft, actually tries it, then nobody can say for sure. Would it be any use asking Microsoft if "x" piece of obscure hardware worked with windohs? Would they say, "you'll know when you try it"? You need to enquire with the hardware vendor, not the software vendor. No there is nothing written about woodcrest, but single cpu only is certainly written. A search for "cpu" yeilded 47 results. Also, 64 bit is well documented to be not supported, which only leads me to believe that you have not read as extensively, or searched as wisely as you needed to, in order to find the information you want. What do google search results for "car" have to do with anything? If I'm too critical for you, then this has been a forum experience for you to forget. .
Okay, get a life I was trying to be nice, now you will just need to find yourself a life. I wasn't asking if Windows works with every single piece of hardware. And by the way, Microsoft *does* have a supported hardware list, which goes through testing and certification to get the WHQL certification. That's how you know when you see the MS Windows logo on hardware, you know it works with Windows, and was tested to at least those standards. I was asking if there was a supported hardware list, and unsupported hardware list for Parallels. I've seen several times in the limited documentation I found relavent to what I'm looking for that some things are set as a future "to be added" and some are "we don't plan to add this ever". This is certainly not the first time I've seen condescending know-it-alls like you, but the last time I checked, I came to a support forum, not because I knew everything, but because I needed some support. The fact that the staff at parallels don't care to respond to threads in their own forums asking for what hardware is supported, and what is not, is a big indication that I need to stay away. Does everyone test every possible configuration, no. However, if the company cares about working with most of the populace, they've certainly tested a fair amount of hardware. Motherboard manufacturers commonly list memory that they know works, and often some they know don't work. What I'm trying to prevent is a $3k frustration. So, before I plopped down about $3k on a mid end machine, I wanted to know what hardware was supported by their software, which would have been a major reason to buy that hardware in the first place. I'm sure you're just loved in all circles. Take your attitude and piss off into some "we know everything" back patting forum. Again, last I checked, I posted my question in a support forum. John
. Here's the thing. Your request was absolutely ridiculous. Even with a product as mature as windohs, or Oracle, or Linux, there has never been any such thing as a list of all the hardware they can work with. Only what has actually been tested. And these lists are always largely general with some amount of specifics. That is the only reasonable way to present the information, and anyone sparing a moments thought for the situation would have realised that. We also know that Parallels has such a thing, and further to that, there are some user experiences with this extremely green product, right here in these forums. As for a life. Well, we have two boys who both play soccer on Saturday, and Australian football on Sunday. They get a lot of help from their Mum and Dad with their school work too. I am the secretary and a foundation member of a local kart club. I have a small business that I operate during the week and bits on the weekend, while my wife is a conveyencing clerk. I am the registrar of our kids footy club, where my wife is the secretary. I have family and in-laws. Tonight we will be staying with the guy who was best man at our wedding eleven years ago. We have been mates since a short stint working together 24 years ago. Last month I got together again with three mates from high school who have kept in touch for 25 years now. I have some friends, and a fair bit of life, but your concern is appretiated. .
Incredible I find it incredible how you can post so many posts without being the least bit helpful in a support forum. Perhaps you should go spend time with your "boys" because you are completely useless at least in this thread. You have not provided one URL or other direction to a specific place you proclaim to have this knowledge I'm seeking. It is not unreasonable what I'm asking, since as I said MS maintains compatible lists, as do many other vendors. So, barring any posts from other people, I'm not planning on responding to any more of your posts. Enjoy, John
