Have Suse 10.0 as host and WinXP as Guest. I was installing EPD2004, an engineering cad program. When it install the flexlm driver, WinXP crashed, that is, went away completely. When I start the VM again, gets to where the windows desktop is shown, then promptly crashes again. Set the network not to connect at startup, and it takes a little longer. If I can get taskmanager to going and kill the last two svhost.exe process in addition to a java process, it will last long enough to the the control panel open to adminstrative tools, services. I see nothing there unusual. Then it will crash again.

Is there any way to get WinXP into safe mode or some other action so it does not crash so I can look at the registry, etc and remove all of the entries and environment variables for what was being installed? Any other way to find out what is going on or do I start all over again, which I do not relish doing (took 2 days to get where I was before the crash). This cad program is one of two that I need that only runs in windows. Otherwise I would forget windows completely.

Press F8 intermitantly as the VM/Windows is starting. You will get a menu from which you can select safe mode.

That does not seem to work. Tried several times, no go.

    Well that's a bummer.

If you hold down the left shift key during the entire boot process, this should stop drivers from loading, which may get you somewhere.

No luck. All I get a a KDE dialog about sticky keys, even being sure I click with the mouse in the windows boot window.

Finally got it to go into the menu for selecting safe mode. I disabled the network in parallels, then held the left shift key on power up. Restored the system back to the last windows update, then enabled the network, and back to where I have WinXP. Now have to figure out how to get my program installed.

Well, I was going to email the bug reports, but have found no way to att the attachment. Where is the button for attachments? Looked for 10 minutes and found nothing. Must be well hidden or not at all obvious.

Check your acceleration level into VM configuration. Make it Normal instead of High and it should help to solve your problem.

I done a recover from winxp after getting into safe mode, then tried installing the program again, still crashed and would crash each time turning on the VM. Changed the acceleration level to Normal, that cured the problem and I finished the installation. Still have a problem with one of the programs though. I get a "CRC error! File has been modified. If you run a system debugger, clear all breakpoints before running this program".

Any suggestions on how to fix this? The program has not been modified and worked in WinXP native install.

Never got the one program to work, but found a workaround. The programs I really need require a specific NIC MAC address. I changed the "MAC address=" in the .pvs file for the VM to the MAC address required by the program license file. Now, everything is working.
