this morning I upgraded from build 1970 to 3188. at one point I was prompted to select a video driver and I must have selected the wrong one as I've lost all video support. Every time I startup the VM, all I get is a black screen. The most I see is the XP logo during start up. Edit / Virtual Machine / Video showed no resolutions at all, so I added a basic 640 x 480 which made no difference. I've re-ran the upgrade but it didn't make any difference. I was running dual monitors, so I disconnected the second monitor. Doing so did not help. Re-ran the installer with the second monitor disabled; again no video display. The VM is up and running because it shows up in My Network Places on my backup PC. Any ideas? Running Mac OSX 10.4.9
After booting into safe mode, all the video settings seemed fine. Re-booted back into normal startup and once again am facing the black screen. I think that the problem is with how Parallels is displaying video, not XP. Am currently backing up the critical files on the VM as it appears that I will have to do a complete re-install unless I can figure out how to adjust the Parallels video settings. Any other ideas? david p.s. I should add that because of the black screen I'm unable to install Parallels Tools as I can't see the menu selections.
Reasonably sure that I booted into safe mode and installed the new version of parallels tools whilst in safe mode , then rebooted . Might be worth booting into safe mode , using windows control panel to uninstall Parallels tools , then rebooting - skipping the step that Windows offers to update your video driver and then updating Parallels tools from the Parallels menu .
