Will I need to purchase a Windows OS to be able to use Windows programs such as Frontpage 2000 after installing Parallels Desktop 9 For Mac? The principal reason I am considering purchasing Parallels for Mac is to import Frontpage 2000 from an old PC; if I need to then import my Frontpage websites into some other program after this to improve functionality I will (if I can). One of the chief reasons I purchased a Mac was to import Frontpage into Dreamweaver for Mac, only to learn after the fact that I would not be able to do so. Thank you for your expert assistance
Parallels is a virtual machine environment so in order for you to run Frontpage, you need to have a windows OS installed. I would use the Parallels Transporter tool to convert your old PC into a Virtual Machine under Parallels. Mike V
Hi Mike, thank you for your reply. I am perplexed regarding the second sentence of your recommendation as I expected I would only be running Parallels on the MacBook in order to run Microsoft programs on it, vs. installing Parallels on the old PC. Obviously I have no idea how Parallels is supposed to work, but I take it from your reply that the Parallels Transporter tool will make a connection between the PC and MacBook or install the PC as a subordinate drive on the MacBook. Can you clarify what is involved please. I have held off on purchasing Parallels thus far until I know whether it will work. Thanks again.
Parallels provides a virtual machine, it needs an os inside that virtual machine to run. These OS's can be windows, Linux, Unix, etc. What the parallels transporter does is take your existing physical windows installation on our physical machine and convert it to a VM which you can then run in parallels on your mac. I have moved several of my windows platforms onto my mac using the transporter. Mike V.
Hi You can import all your data from a Windows PC to Parallels Desktop on your Mac. Then you can continue to work with all your Windows programs, files, and data, simultaneously with Mac OS X. There is no need to keep your Windows PC active and running, after importing your data from your PC, you may need to reactivate some of your Windows programs using the activation keys you received when you purchased the programs. Please follow the steps suggested at http://kb.parallels.com/115007 to migrate a Windows PC to Mac using Parallels Desktop.
Thank you again Mike, I appreciate your helpfulness and expertise; I will try to apply what you have recommended. Best to you.
Thanks so much Ram. One boneheaded question: after importing the data from a Windows PC, will the Windows programs be running in a Windows environment or a Mac environment?
Hi, After importing the data from a Windows PC, Windows applications will be running in Windows Virtual Machine (Windows environment).
