I can't get outlook attachments to launch

I had been able to launch Office apps from Outlook attachments for four or five months. It just stopped working.

It's like the system tries but can't complete the open. For example, I can double click a word doc, and word will launch or come to the front of the windows, but then the document never displays, only a new document. Very confusing...
