Hello all, I have a macbook pro (C2D with 2GB OSX 10.49) with 3188 build/win xp sp2 and it crashed after I plugged in an USB scanner (Canon). Parallels froze and I had to reset to exit the program. From this point on, it will only load the windows logo for a few seconds and then to the black screen. I did some searching the last couple of days on this forum and I have tried some common solutions/suggestions from members, but I have no luck. At this point, I only want to retrieve some files in my documents folder and dump the VM. Please help or let me know if I have done something wrong. Here's are some steps that I have tried: -Hit fn/F8 to boot in SAFE mode, VGA mode and LAST KNOWN GOOD mode and all went to black screen -backuped the VM, uninstalled parallels completely and re-installed parallels. black screen -Cloned the VM and tried loading it again. black screen. Thanks in advance for looking.
and another.. Hey - I feel your pain. Sorry no solutions here, just letting you know that I've just encountered the same problem just today. It happened right after I upgraded to 3188. Black Screen. Troubleshooted with "last known good config" ; uninstall/reinstall Parallels ; used Transporter to create an alternate .hdd & .pvs . All to know avail. I just want to extract files from the VM also. Thanks for starting this - will keep a look out in this thread.
Are we stuck? I am sorry that you are having the same problem. Are we stuck in this situation? Anyone in the tech support team can help? I really hate to loose this files..............
Have you tried looking at these usual fixes? http://forum.parallels.com/thread10384.html To extract, make a new VM and add your old .hdd file as a second hard drive from the properties window before you start your vm.
I did try the usual fixes in your previous post, but I had no luck. Thanks for the tip, Eru. I will try this tonight.
http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/faq/t5/#t5-3 Read that FAQ. note.. its not the same process as you have already taken in safe mode. in safe mode, you haev to reinstall parallels tools....
Am I correct that this suggests that it occurs after an upgrade? Everyone here with the problem did an upgrade to 3188?
Thanks guys - will try these ASAP and get back with the outcome. Just to confirm - yes this all happened during upgrade to 3188 - also have had a shot at bootong into "safe" mode. Still got the black death. Expect that I will go for the boot from image/boot disc and attempt repair to Win XP. Thanks again.
Okay - Motech. I retrieved the files I wanted from the WINXP VM. Be prepared for some serious stuffing around if you want to try my solution though. First thing to note is the my black screen VM was initially running XP HOME. I also have to hand XP PRO and used this in my solution. Here goes; Have alternate OS (HOME or PRO) install disc in local CDROM/DVD drive. Start your XP VM with the CD first in boot sequence. Install new OS. Without any further action - run Parallels Tools Installer on your clean Guest OS. Quit and then Re-start Parallels and start the troublesome VM. You will end up with one VM that can run a choice of OS at start up. Choose alternate OS (for me it was PRO) and interogate C: drive. You should find two OS folders and one "Documents and Settings" folders with all of your current (fresh) users and older (blck death sufferring) users. I copied my wanted files straight into my Parallels Shared folder - so now have them in a folder on my OSX Desktop. more to come....
using bootcamp as a workaround.. I have same problem here with my macbook pro (C2D with 2GB OS X 10.4.9) running 3188 build with win xp pro sp2. All these "black screen" problems started after I started to use this Novatel Merlin HSDPA card. Now I actually can't use it in windows, because I always get this "Device is in use..." error, but that's a another story. Actually windows sees this card until I click OK to this parallels error message. Anyway, old version of parallel tools was not the problem for me, since I only installed parallel tools from the latest build. So, no safe mode uninstallation of parallel tools was needed. What I have noticed so far is, that I can boot windows again in parallels even after seeing this black screen if I use bootcamp to start the windows in between. Then i just shutdown windows normally and reboot back to OS X. After doing this, Windoze XP boot in parallels takes bit longer than normal, but it will actually start up again. Strange thing is that sometimes windows boots normally and this black screen problem doesn't appear every time I run windoze in parallels.
