Ok, I think I have read every thread that addresses this problem or similar problems, but please direct me to an existing thread if you think I missed something. I am upgrading parallels (to build 3188) on a 2 CPU dual-core MacPro. I had previously installed boot camp (XP) and it was running well, so I decided to make a new VM using the boot camp drive.

When I ran the VM for the first time it couldn't find the boot camp partition because I have a second drive and it didn't know which one was the boot camp drive. So I followed the directions on the forum here and added the "Boot Camp;disk0s3" to my newly created .pvs file.

The next boot the VM froze up at the login screen. I couldn't (and still can't) get it to do anything. I then tried to boot into bootcamp (the normal way through restarting) and that worked once but now I am greeted with the same freeze up.

In reading the forum it seems the problem is probably due to the fact that Parallels Tools never successfully installed because I never made it past the login screen. I saw one fix that suggested issuing a "control userpasswords2" via the run command, but unfortunately I read this after I could no longer boot into boot camp.

Also I am running McAfee in boot camp and it has been suggested that McAfee blocks changes to the registry. *shrug*

Anyone got any ideas other than reinstalling boot camp and XP? It occurs to me that if I could get into boot camp I might be able to turn auto login on and then install the Tools on my first successful login via Parallels. . .
