    Hi Folks

I had a system crash after attempting to load Parallels Desktop for Mac build 5608, and reverted right back to build 3214 at the moment.

I have an authentic version of Windows XP and have SP's 1-2-3 installed together with all patches.

I run AVG security, which I disabled during a second attempt to load software.

I am trying to install a proprietary charting software package from CD. (Market Technologies "Vantage Point)

The installation proceeds OK until the same point each time then fails. I have successfully installed the same disc on a PC and it loaded and ran flawlessly, so I returned to the Mac and had another go - same dismal result.

Where can I now go for help with this?

The first error message says: Unable to execute System. NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to and instance of an object.
    at VPUtility.HardwareInfo.a(String b, String b)
    ....
    at DBHelper.DBHelper.a(StringBuilder b)
    ......
    and so on.

Then " Unable to Create connection to the database - Master.
Object reference not set to an instance of tan object"

Does this mean anything to anyone reading this?

Is there another site where such issues are discussed?

    Unsure where to turn.

Thanks to any and all suggestions.

Thank you for your speedy response John.

I followed your tip and did download 3224 this morning ... successfully for the download ... unsuccessfully for installing the software.

I should probably now go back to build 5600 (very wary of 5608) to see if that assists.

Could you please steer me in the direction to the Build 5600 download link - when I check for latest version I receive the message:

Current Build 3224 - Your version of the Parallels Desktop is up-to-date.

This may be correct as far as upgrading from the original disc is concerned, but I actually have an activation code for the latest versions and have not been asked to enter this since I rebuilt Parallels.

Can you please tell me whether the activation code is required only for certain later builds, and how do I step up to those.

Thank you for your valuable time on this - it means quite a lot to me as I depend on this software.

    Kind regards and appreciation

    By the way ...

I kept getting this message at the very beginning of the installation:

    KB893803v2 Setup Error
Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying.
There is no need to install this update.

That looks like one of the Windows update patches to me - but I am really computer software illiterate when it comes to such things.

Also I was wondering whether there were remnants of previous attempts at installation still possibly blocking free installation. So I went in to Windows/explore and deleted the folders that were previously installed by the software, and rebooted the VM.

Upon another attempt to install, the same old messages come up, including the one in bold type above.

Hope this adds to the picture.

    Kind regards

    Ivan

It looks you need to contact their support , kb installation is either hardcoded in msi, or installer cannot recognize installed SP, sorry, this is product specific, and we do not know their internals

Thank you John. I have removed SP3 from Windows XP now and the error and downloaded the Windows installer :

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&displaylang=en

which did solve the error message ... but still did not allow the installation past the same point of failure as previously. I have probably damaged a few files... but a reinstall is painless and this time I will get that part right.

Prior to this I attempted to download the specific file: KB893803v2 but was blocked by the message "Higher version already installed" or words to that effect.
As well I have updated .NET files which I had custom installed not to be included in the original rebuild of Win XP after the crash. Same negative result unfortunately.

With the help of a friend I have checked regedit permissions too.

Here is the response so far from Parallels support - (I will follow their advice) :

    Hello

We investigated situation, and found several issues from our side and from ISPs in several states, and we are working now to correct this situation, the problem was, that sometimes, link to updated build lead to either old version of update, or file somehow got corrupted during download.
I suppose we will fully resolve situation in 15-30 days
Please download build 5608 following link bellow:
    http://download.parallels.com/v3/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-5608-Mac-en.dmg

and reinstall Parallels Desktop as described in kb
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/4790

Thank you for you energy and time John - this has been very helpful not only through assisting in reducing the list down to a few culprit suspects ... but also in helping me mentally through this in knowing someone has cared - invaluable support and I bless you for it.

When I do discover the solution I will post it here for your future benefit too.

    Kind regards

    Ivan

    I followed the instructions here:

    http://kb.parallels.com/en/4790

which shows how to repair the mac hdd permissions.

After rebooting and then going to the download link and installing build 5608 the software I am trying to install loaded flawlessly.

You should see the grin on my face - and I deserve it my friend - I have put in about 40 hours over the past 4 days on this one problem.

I still have to reinstall the full windows SP3 etc to restore security, but completion of that is nothing now - I have been through the fire! (or so it seems)

Again thank you for your wonderful support.

    Kind regards
