I'm close to maxed out on my Core 2 Duo iMac. I should have ordered the 500 GB, but didn't. Pity. Can I transfer the Parallels folder to an external HD and run WinXP from the virtual HD on the external HD? If so, can I then point to the virtual HD in the Parallels console window? If I can, what, if any, problems am I likely to face? I realize that I will have a performance hit, but with FW800 it shouldn't be to bad.
I'm running Parallels on a mini with the .pvm and the .hdd files on a Firewire 400 drive (a LaCie 250) attached to it. Both the VM and the .hdd files were originally created on the internal drive, and subsequently moved without problems. (One pleasant surprise: when I pointed Parallels at the new .pvm it found the new .hdd [same directory] itself. Nice touch there by the Parallels guys as it was one less setting to remember to change.) I'm sure I'm seeing some performance hits because of the FW drive, but I really haven't noticed the difference in day-to-day use.
I have a mini-stack 360 gig and have move Parallels files back and forth, it is great. I even have one where main hdd is on Mac and second is on Mini stack. The only real diff i have notice in speed is the miniStack does a sleep mode and it sometimes takes a few seconds for it to come up to speed
