I have a generic 7.200 RPM external HDD connected to one of my MacMini Late 2018 TB3 ports, using an USBA->USBC adapter. When the disk is connected to the MacOS I can access the files without problem (the disk is formatted with NTFS). But when I connect the disk to my Windows Server 2019 VM, it shows that the drive is connected to the VM but it doesn't shows up on the Windows Explorer neither is recognized by the Disk Managment applet.

I've been using this disk for backup for at least the last 2 years but this problem started a few months ago. I tried connecting the disk to one of the USB-A ports on the MacMini but it made no difference. After 3 o 4 reboots, the VM starts to recognize the disk but if I reebot again the problem starts over.

Any idea about what could be the problem ?

    Hello,

    Thank you for your feedback.

To further investigate the technical issue, kindly provide us with the following information:
    1. Have you tried to connect the external HDD directly to your Mac instead of using the USBA->USBC adapter?
    2. Collect a technical report (right-click the Parallels icon in Dock > Help > Send technical data > check "Attach screenshots..." > press Send Report) and provide us with the report's 9-digit ID in reply to this post.

    Thanks

Yes, I've done that. Originally, the drive was connected to an USB3 4-port hub that was connected to one of the MacMini's USB-A ports. Since the problem started, I've tried connecting the drive directly to the USB-A port in the MacMini, back into the USB host and now directly to one of the TB3 ports, but the problem persists: the drive can be accessed normally in MacOS but is not being recognized by the Windows VM when is attached to it. I will send you the tech report as soon as I can.

Yesterday I connected the drive directly to one of the MacMini's USBA ports, restarted the VM twice and now Windows recognizes it and last night the automatic backup task was executed normally... let's see of this sticks for a while.

Yeah. Same here. Right now is not recognizing it, but if I transfer it to the MacOS then the drive loads perfectly and the data is there.

I am also having the same issue. External hard drive I have used for years all of a sudden stops being recognized in Windows 10 using Parallels, but the Mac can see it. This seems to have just happened after recent update to Parallels software (now using v 19.1.0). Windows can see the device when I look under devices, but it says there is a driver error and troubleshooting does not fix it. I went so far as to buy a new hard drive assuming mine went bad, and right out of the box I have the same error with the new one, so this is clearly a Parallels issue. Is there any way to revert to a previous version of the Parallels software? Or any suggestions on how to get Windows to recognize these devices?
