    I managed to get Debian Linux installed, but I can only (via the Gnome UI, anyway) set 640x480 or 800x600 resolutions. Any Linux-experienced folks out there know which config file I need to tweak to enable higher resolutions?

    thx;

    Try setting from root terminal (from Applications, choose System Tools/Root Terminal)

    Type in "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86". Go through the steps keeping the already selected items until you come to the monitor configuration (make sure you have "yes" selected at the question "is your monitor an LCD device?" and select "advanced" at "Please choose a method for selecting your monitor's characteristics".

    Keep the horizontal sync and vertical refresh values, then select (by scrolling and pressing the space bar) the video modes (i.e. resolutions) you want to use. Then keep the rest of the already selected values.

    You'll need to log out and restart. The resolutions should be available to you then.

    Or you can try directly editing /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 but I never had much success with that.

    Thanks! That mostly worked (though it insists on changing the sync timing for 1152x864, so that's not usable). But 1024x768 is a nice improvment, and 1280x960 is working as well.
