I'm using 1896.2 on a base-spec Mac Pro. If Parallels is running and connected to the "real" DVD drive then, although I can *open* the tray with the F12 key or "drutil tray open" there is no way to close it again (including "drutil tray close") other than pushing on the tray (ugh! physical intervention!) "Disconnect" the drive from Parallels and it works. Obviously, people with iMacs and MacBooks will know nothing of this "tray" of which I speak - which is probably why it doesn't work in Parallels. (Dear Apple: would it really be so unthinkable to sully the lines of the blessed cheesegrater with an open/close button?)
FWIW, I've been closing trays on CD/DVD drives with a little push for years and have never had a problem. It's easier than reaching for a button -- just insert the disk, your hand is right there, and give the tray a flip. I've never been a slave to vendor intentions; I like to think for myself.
