Hi there, my friend recently installed parallels on his mac, and we have been experimenting with it, my question is, can a version of windows be run on bootcamp as usual, and then when in the Mac OS, be opened again from parallels, so that you can work with the same setup etc.

You can make your Bootcamp installation workable from within Parallels. That is available with the latest BETA version, not the latest official release, though. And so if you're going to use the BETA, which has some really amazing features (like using the Bootcamp installation while you're in OS X), I recommend you back up your Bootcamp installation first with Drive Image XML (do a search on the net for it -- it's FREE) and BartPE with the DriveImage XML plug-in (also FREE on the net -- do a search). Once you back up the system, then if anything goes wrong, you can restore your original setup.

I did this. It works very well and gives the advantage of both worlds.
