Eru, Thank you for the prompt reply. Yes I installed it in XP. When I attempt to print, in Quicken Win, the generic postscript printer is visible in the printer setup box. When I then select it, get error message "Problem communicating with printer, data passed to a system call is too small." Appreciate any advice you may have. Herb Hiller
Hmm... Strange. What happens if you directly connect it to your machine and then select it from the USB menu.
Eru, I have lived with the problem for 6 mos. When I have last printed in OSX, starting parallels allows usb to recognize printer. When I need to switch printing from parallels to OSX, turning off parallels allows OSX usb to recognize the printer again. Not a wonderful arrangement, but I just have never been able to make Bonjour work. Herb Hiller
Herb, I guess you got the wrong impression. I just wanted to make sure you could even make it talk! What is the physical set-up you are trying to accomplish, fill me in on the details so I can (well, at least try) help you get the goal! Is it using an Airport WiFi router? Stuff like that. Furthermore, can you use it via Bonjour with your Mac?
Eru, No airport, no router. I want to be able to print in OSX & in Parallels XP guest file, using the same HP printer, with native settings on OSX side & Bonjour settinga on the XP side. I believe I have read on the forums that many ecstatic users have accomplished that! Am I misunderstanding something? I checked the XP control panel hardware section. THE GENERIC POSTSCRIPT PRINTER is listed as a network printer, but when I check the box to activate it get error message "could not save" Her Hiller
I had a similar problem. It seemed to me that once the XP USB driver was active, the Bonjour driver was hosed. What worked for me was the following: 1) Uninstall the printer drivers from XP 2) reboot XP 3) reboot OSX 4) reboot printer 5) Does native OSX printing work for this printer? If no, reinstall OSX printer drivers and reboot. repeat 3 and 4. 6) Start Parallels and run your VM. Install Bonjour for Windows. Select the Generic Postscript driver. If you see your printer listed as a choice in Bonjour, select that instead. 7) You should now be able to select your Bonjour printer from the printer list as you print from an XP application. You should now be able to print from both OSX and XP without any fuss. Advantages/Disadvantages of Bonjour Solution 1) Both OSX and XP can send print jobs to the queue at the same time. 2) If your printer is a highly specialized printer, or is a multifunction device like a scanner, copier, fax...some of the functionality may not work in XP Advantages/Disadvantages of USB Solution 1) Full functionality of your printer in XP 2) But you have to fuss with which OS currently "owns" the printer, disconnecting and reconnecting, as if you are virtually removing the USB from one computer and plugging it in to another computer. Only one OS at a time can "talk" to the printer.
Purplish, I want to report that your suggestions have worked perfectly. I now have a Bonjour "HP color laser jet 4550 ps printing fine. I haven't tested all functions, but I'm most pleased. I'm ashamed to tell you the countlessl hours I've spent on this. Thank you very much. Herb Hiller
