I have a mid-2012 15 inch non-retina, ivy bridge i7 MacBook Pro with 16 gigabytes of RAM, a 256 gigabyte SSD drive and the Nvidia 1GB video card. I use Parallels 8 to run a 100 gigabyte-sized Win7 VM. I use the Win7 VM to develop websites and databases with Visual Studio 2012 and SQL Server 2008. I also play video games in the VM, do remote desktop from the VM, and generally have six to ten applications open in the VM at any one time...

Given the above system, and how I use it, what are the best configuration options for my Parallels Win7 VM? How much RAM should I devote to the VM? How many cores should I devote to the VM? How much RAM should I devote to the video card in the VM, etc.?

    My config for 16G i7 256G SSD

Todd, I have a late 2012 Mac Mini, i7 16GB Ram, 256GB SSD, Intel video, 23 inch non-retina cinema display. I run W7 Home Premium all day since I develop in Lotus Domino Designer. My aim is to make the VM fast; my Mac side is used for graphics, mail, documents etc. I don't do anything on W7 that requires fancy video; that's what I have a Mac for.
I allocate 4 processors & 4GB to the VM, & 512 MB video memory. Mountain Lion likes lots of memory, so I never tried more than 4GB. I tried lower settings, and the VM still runs fast and starts in seconds. I have used Coherence, but prefer the windows desktop to remind me which system I am using.
