I'm trying to figure out how to backup just what I need - which doesn't include anything I run from within Windows. The Parallels VM is pretty big, and backing up my iMac would take 25 DVDs, which is too many.

I'd like some advice in what I should back-up (not counting the documents that will back up to .mac).

Clone your entire hard drive to at least two external FireWire drives (one of which you take off-site). That will make it fast and easy to restore from your backups.

I have a Solaris server farm in my rec room with a couple terabytes of fault tolerant storage arrays. I back up to that. Then I spin it off to dds4 tape. I might be a bit geeky, though.

There are data warehouses on line you can subscribe to and back up all your stuff to their disks. It can be pretty affordable. Some people mail their backups to their gmail account.
