AppServer setting different printer for each published app

    Hi guys,

I've just installed 2X AppServer on our WinServer2003 machine, and that was a breeze. I've now published 3 applications.

Can someone tell me if it's possible to a set a default printer for each of the published apps?

I can see that from the Options -> 2X Universal Printing, you can select either "Print to default printer", "Select printer before printing", "Use following printer..." and "View documents".

I suppose I would like to set the "Use the following printer:" on a per application basis. Can this be done?

Secondly, in any published application, when I go to print, I can see several printers in the drop-down list. However, I don't know where these printers come from?
They're not installed on the TS server, and they're not installed on my local PC as well. I mean I know those printes are in our office physically, but I just don't know how they got on the printer list in the session? They're all network printers by the way.

Lastly, if I add a shared network printer onto my local PC, how can I ensure that these network printers will appear in my session (as it currently doesn't)?

    Regards,
    Shawn

    Hi.

Only one printer can be set as the default printer for all the published apps.

Most prob these are redirected printers, you can disabled these from the MS Terminal Server settings. "Do not redirect local printers"

You can always print from the 2X Universal Printer and select the local printer.

    Thanks for the reply nixu.

Maybe you can tell me how to proceed with my current setup.

    Example
My default printer is a Canon iR2570, which I use for printing everything except labels.

When i print labels, I print to the Zebra ZM400.

One of my published application is a label printing program. How can I set it so that when I'm printing from this program, it gets printed on the Zebra printer (eventhough my default printer is set on the Canon)?
I do not want my users to have to constantly select the Zebra printer from their drop-down list every time they go to print labels.

Also, when I set the Data Format on PDF, then the printout is normal. But when I set the Data Format to EMF, my printouts are faded and the fonts/size are all scewy. Do you know why this is so?

    Regards,
    Shawn

    Hi istyler,

As I mentioned previously you cannot set a default printer per application but, you can set that all published applications print to a specific printer.

    Re, PDF & EMF.
PDF embeds the required fonts in the document, while EMF does not. So basically if the client is missing some fonts, these are replaced by some other font. Make sure that client has the required fonts installed and you should be fine.

Seeing that the Universal Printing component isn't really going to allow me to do what I want, I would like to know if it's recommended to allow for local client printers to be re-directed into the session? As least this way I can set the default printer from within the label program itself.

Also when printing with Data Format in PDF, can we set it to only print and not bring up the PDF file in a reader or acrobat?
Or is there any way for me to find out what fonts are required by the label program?

    Hi,

Well there is nothing wrong in re-directing local client printers and setting it to default printer, just good luck with the drivers.....

This is an Adobe Acrobat issue. In fact if you drag and drop a pdf file on a printer Adobe opens.

If you open the PDF file with acrobat, under file -> properties -> fonts you can see the list of fonts required.

    Hi nixu,

I know that in the Preferences of the Adobe PDF Printer, there is an option to not show the results after printing (uncheck "View PDF Results"), so is this option not available anywhere?

I'm not really familiar with EMF files, so I'm hoping you can help me out here. Having obtained all the required fonts and installed it on my PC (and server), I'm still not able to print correctly using EMF. Is there anything else I need to do?

    Thanks,
    Shawn
