For files, it is perfectly possible to define either for one individual file or for a filetype in general, what program should open it. For protocols, this is not yet ideal. I have my default browser on OSX that I use for most stuff, but some websites require either Firefox or (aaarg) Internet Explorer. What I would like to define is that a website that goes to a particular domain should open up in one browser, while other links open up in another browser. In much the same way, I want to have windows folder links that do not specify a specific protocol but just say C://.. or \\server1\data\Project\... to open up in windows, obviously, as they are not understood by Finder. It would be a bliss if that could be achieved somehow.
