If you see this post http://forums.parallels.com/thread12528.html a few posts down, this seems to be a known issue that Parallels are working on.
Yeah go for it with the trial key - I made the same mistake in installing it and my 3.0 key not working (I didn't think it would, but hoped)...
I also found that if you request a trial key from inside Parallels, the key does not work; you must request the trial key from the Parallels website.
