Virtual memory and paging file

Ever since I installed the 5584 upgrade, I’ve been getting this message: “Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.â€

The last time I did an update, I got the same thing and someone advised me to go into Windows XP’s control panel under system-advanced-virtual memory and under custom size change the initial size to 1536. I did that, and my problem stopped. Well, my size is the same under 5584, but now that message is returning. Is there some additional setting I need to tinker with?

Also, in Parallels, my prefs for memory are set to adjust memory limit automatically. The slider is at 704. The “enable virtual memory preallocation†is not checked. These must have been the defaults, because I’ve never altered them.

I’m on Tiger, 10.4.11 with all updates current, and my VM is Windows XP Professional, running on my hard drive. (Not boot camp.) I have 3 GB of RAM, and all I do with Windows is run Explorer and one proprietary work program that won’t run under Mac.

Does 5584 require something different now? Do I also have to go into some setting and change a paging file number?

(By the way, prior to the installation I had done rigorous, routine maintenance operations, including running the compressor, which worked fine. Only then did I install the update after uninstalling the previous Parallels version.)

Anybody able to help with this one? I don’t find the answer in previous posts, unless I’ve somehow managed to miss it. (Or is this a bug in the newest version?)

no help here, but i get the same message. doesn't really affect anything for me though. i just ignore it.

windows isn't the best at memory management so i'm not surprised.

As you have read, Windows is already trying to fix the problem. A lot of users encounter this problem when their virtual memory minimum becomes very low. When you see the message Your system is running low on virtual memory, do not panic because Windows usually increase the size of your virtual memory paging file. In case, your problem fails to be resolved, you can at least try increasing the virtual memory yourself. Try to add more physical RAM. This may improve your virtual memory and make it easier for you to run multiple programs at once. The more RAM there is, the easier it would be for you to multitask. You can go into virtual memory and adjust the settings.
