    Hi all,

I have pushed the use of Parallels as a way of using alternative os's on mac os x for 12 months now to my clients. To be honest with you I'm getting tired of this Leopard experiment, and am looking to migrate the companies I support using Parallels to an alternative solution. I really don't want to do this; Parallels give me some hope the issues will be sorted soon!

Today, a client who is running a separate Parallels vs Fusion trial needed to upgrade 6 macs from Tiger to Leopard, all have been running fine previously, however, after the upgrade the Shared Networking mode seemed completely fubar'd. os x 10.5.1:parallels:5582. This was replicated on a second macBook Pro 2.4ghz

Whilst other networking modes functioned fine this was a major problem as it meant mobile-3g usb modem work (which was connected and functioning fine on the os x side) was inaccessible as a gateway for the VM, thus non of the users could work outside of a hardwired / airport environment.

An alternative solution of connecting the 3g modem directly to the vm was completely unreliable (10 mins for the vm environment to even realise a usb modem was attached), probably down to the os-x grabs usb devices problem which has been discussed so many times here without conclusion.

The issue was eventually resolved by the following actions:

Summary: install the new version of MacFuse:

    Questions:

When will this update be incorporated into the Parallels stack.
This can't be an unknown. Why does there not appear to be a support note?

(extract of email sent to user):

    ..........................

The issue appears to be in the macFuse stack. What we need to do is:

-1) Make SURE your vm is shut down - exit Parallels
    1) Save the attached file on your mac

    */
    http://macfuse.googlecode.com/files/MacFUSE-Core-10.5-1.3.1.dmg
    /*

    2) Double click on the disk image (dmg file) - this will open the contents, 2x text documents 1x pkg file
    3) Double click on the "Mac Fuse Core.pkg" file
this will open up the macFuse installer
    4) Go through the installer - default options are fine - you will have to enter your password.
    5) Reboot your Mac
    6) Wait a couple of mins for your new macFuse driver to initialise
    7) Start Parallels desktop -
Finder -- Applications -- Parallels -- Parallels Desktop -- Select your windows XP vm DONT press run just yet.

    or

I think we put an icon on the dock, just double press it.

    8) On the Parallels desktop menu - ensure Edit --> Virtual Machine --> Network Adapter is set to "Shared Networking"
also make sure you have on the usb tab --> ask me before connecting.

    9) [space holder - nothing to do here - move on]

    10) Turn Airport off - if on (click on the radar like image next to clock at top and choose Turn Airport off)
    11) click the radar again and choose "Open Network Preferences"
    12) Highlight the Huawei modem from the left menu and press Connect - also tick the show modem status in menu bar (this will put a phone icon next to the radar - which you can use quickly going forward)

    Wait for connect

Now open Safari and check google.com (or something else) works.

    13) go back to Parallels and press start (Green arrow)
    14) Check Parallels is using the shared-network stack -- Parallels desktop (at the top) --> Devices --> Network Adapter1 -->
    15) Open IE and check you can go to Google.com

All okay? --> Click on the phone icon we put next to the radar --> Disconnect.

    Re-enable Airport for normal use!

    Hello Northflux2,

    Thank you for this report.

We are trying to make Parallels Desktop compatible to the most up-to-date software. That's why the new build required the new MacFUSE version.

I am going to add the solution you cited here in our Knowledge Base to make it available for everybody.

    Best regards,
    Xenos
