I had to reinstall the OS X on my iMac, after which Parallels wouldn't open. So I reinstalled parallels. The app now opens, but when I try to start the VM, i receive a message saying my copy of parallels is currently not active and that I need to activate it to start the virtual machine. Until 2 days ago I was using parallels. Why did I suddenly lose my activation, from reinstalling the application?
Hello Kshadlen, Are you trying to launch your Virtual Machine by clicking Parallels icon on your Desktop? It could have become unusable after reinstall. Please try to start VM from Applications -> Parallels. Best regards, Xenos
Thanks for the response. It doesn't matter if I'm clicking on the Parallels icon in the dock or from the applications folder. Either way I'm asked to activate. It doesn't make sense. The problem (in case you're wondering why I don't just go ahead and activate), is that we've temporarily lost the internet connection on the iMac, on acct of a faulty Airport card, so I cannot activate as requested. This means that I cannot access any of the files/applications that are in the Windows side of the iMac. Can you please help get this clarified?
Hello Kshadlen, Parallels Desktop activation requires network connection, that's true. Is your internet problem going to be solved soon? It is possible though to access your files from the Windows side using Parallels Transporter or Parallels Mounter. If you open the Parallels folder and double-click the .hdd file, Parallels Mounter will make a folder containing all files from your Virtual Machine. Best regards, Xenos
Dear Xenos: At last the internet connection is back. I still cannot open parallels. I'm given a choice of purchasing an activation key or obtaining a free trial key. I've had parallels on this machine since November 2006. I should not have to pay for it again. Please do help! THanks, Ken
Hello Ken, Please let me know your Activation Key number by Private Message - I'll check what's the matter with your key. Best regards, Xenos
I have Parallels 2.5. I have followed these instructions: http://kb.parallels.com/entry/14/463/0/ When I enter cat /Library/Parallels/.parallels.license.2.5, I receive the following response: cat: /Library/Parallels/.parallels.license.2.5: No such file or directory When I type cd Library/Parallels and then ls -la, I see lots of stuff (total 48). One of things listed is .parallels_license_2.5. But when I type cat .parallels_license_2.5 (as instructed), nothing happens, I just get returned to the same command prompt. I might as well just be hitting the enter key without the cat command. I'm not comfortable enough in Unix to figure out how to open this file, but evidently it has the golden information locked inside... Thanks, ken
Hello Ken, Please look at the article again. You should type cat /Library/Parallels/.parallels_license_2.5. Or cd /Library/Parallels/ ls -la cat .parallels_license_2.5 Best regards, Xenos
sorry, i typed wrongly here in the support forum. I've been entering it correctly, with underscores and not periods. Xenos: I've sent longer message with Terminal results via private message. Thanks, Ken
Hello Ken, Could you please send the full description of this issue and the confirmation of the purchase to [email protected] ? Best regards, Xenos
ok, but did you see the longer message with details I sent as private message? Please let me know what you think. There are two problems here, one is that i can't find my activation key (the Terminal commands don't work) and the other is that the instructions for acquiring temporary activation key don't work either. Are you suggesting I write to order-support about both problems or only the inability to get temporary registration key? It's now been 2+ weeks that i've been without parallels... Very frustrating. Thanks, ken
Hello Ken, Yes I have seen the message from you. Please get a trial key from www.parallels.com and write a letter to Order support. Explain the situation and provide the information on purchase. See the details in PM. Best regards, Xenos
Hello Xenos: Well, I decided I'd try to activate using the Serial number on the back of the booklet that came with the software, and it works. If I'd known that activation key and serial number were the same thing i could have avoided a lot of headache! Thanks for your help. Ken
Hello Ken, Sorry I did not allow for you still keeping the booklet. It's been so simple! Happy to know the problem is resolved. Conrgats. Best regards, Xenos
