My MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.1 and Parallels Desktop build 5160 has been unable to successfully get Parallels Tools installed and operating correctly since upgrading from Tiger to Leopard several weeks ago. After getting a Parallels error message yesterday telling me to "Re-install Parallels Desktop" I backed up all Windows data and reloaded Parallels. Doing so did not resolve the problem. Symptoms of problem is when I attempt to open any Office attachment to an Outlook message I get an error message telling me "Parallels Desktop cannot open file C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKF5\DOCSSEA.DOC from the guest OS. You can open only files located on Windows drives (volumes) which have drive letters assigned or in Parallels Shared Folders". I did note on one of the forums that installing an update to MacFuse would help address some of the problems being experienced by Parallels users with Leopard upgrades, but after installing that update I had no change in symptoms or the problem. I would like to know if this is a common problem, whether there is a known workaround, and if it is on the radar for Parallels to address with the "to be announced" Leopard compatible release? Ann feedback or comments appreciated
I have had the same problem first noted with pdf documents saved to the desktop. If I move them into my shared folder, they open fine. This is pretty frustrating. MacBook 4 gig memory, 10.5.1, Parallels build 5160, guest OS - XP Pro
Update on this issue with PD build 5582 I have upgraded to the latest PD build 5582, reinstalled Parallels Tools as directed by installer, attempted to populate the Shared Mac Applications (which is grayed out) and it looked like this action was occurring but when the cursor finally came back from "busy" there were no applications listed and "Shared Mac Applications" is still grayed out under Parallel Desktop>Applications. When double clicking on a word document attached to an Outlook email I now get Mac Word opening, but then am presented with a dialog box asking what type of document I am trying to open (text, RTF, etc.) there is no choice for "Word documents". I get similar behavior when trying to open a Excel Spreadsheet attachment except it tells me that the attachment is not a "valid file format". Anyone having similar problems or have any ideas on what configuration option is being missed in setup or preferences that will address this problem?
another person with the same problem This thread is closely related to the "To use your Windows files directly in Mac you should reinstall Parallels Desktop." and "Opening attachments to Outlook email" threads. I have the same issue, and I'm crossposting so everyone having the same issue can find help more easily. This is using OS X 10.4.11 Parallels 5584 WindowsXP SP2 Outlook 2003 The events that caused Outlook attachments to be unable to opened by Mac applications are as follows: The user's account was a local account, but I needed to convert it to a Network account unfortunately the shortname was the same. So I followed these steps I found on the Internet: I renamed the user's home folder for existing local account I deleted the local user's account (to remove it from the Netinfo database) made the new network account I rename the user's home folder back to the original shortname I did a "chown" command on the folder like this: Everything seems to be fine except for opening attachments directly from within Outlook, unless you use a Windows app to do so. If a Mac app is assigned to open the attachment, we see the same error as Old Marine does: "Parallels Desktop cannot open file C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKF5\DocumentName.doc from the guest OS. You can open only files located on Windows drives (volumes) which have drive letters assigned or in Parallels Shared Folders". I believe this to be a permissions error. I have checked the permissions on the C drive alias, and "Others" was set to "Read Only". I tried setting it to "Read & Write" and rebooting Windows and restarting Parallels, but that didn't work. The Group permission is still "Read only", but I don't know what group these aliases should be. Someone on the forums suggested deleting these aliases and letting Parallels recreate them, but I'm a little nervous about that. I also tried: reinstalling Parallels Tools disconnecting all Shared Folders, restarting Windows and reenabling them If the files are on the Windows desktop they open in Mac apps fine, just not from within Outlook which is what the user expects to do.
