Hi, since I am using the same home directory for both Windows and Mac OS X (i.e., the same Documents/My Documents, Pictures/My Pictures and so on) I am experiencing an error 1606 while installing software (it happened with several different software packages). As an example installing the Nokia Software Updater I get: Error 1606: Could not access network location \\.PSF\.Home\Documents\. On the Mac OS X the permissions are fine: $ ls -ld Documents drwxr-xr-x+ 26 corti corti 884 Nov 6 06:33 Documents While on the Windows side the My Documents folder has the "read only" checkbox checked (and gray). If I uncheck it Windows removes the read only setting but when I open the properties of My Documents a second time the checkbox is checked again. Looking at this forum I saw the hint about reinstalling the "prlNP.inf" network service but I get the following: "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware" Any hint? Matteo
Hello, after the installation of Parallels Tools, Parallels Network Provider might not start. So we can try to install them manually. Open Control Panel->Network and Sharing Center->Manage network connection. Right click Parallels Network Adapter and choose properties. Click Install. Choose Add service. Click Have disk, browse for Crogram Files/Parallels/Parallels Tools/PrlNP.inf and install it. Best regards, Alicia.
Dear Alicia, as stated in my original post I already tried that and windows tells me "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware" When adding the service. Matteo
I tried to reinstall the tools: * I still get the error 1606 while installning * I get the same message if I try to install PrlNP.inf Thanks, Matteo
Unfortunately, Windows doesn't allow to install applications to shared folders so there's no way you can perform it. Best regards, Alicia.
Dear Alicia, I am not installing to a shared folder (I am installing to c:\Program Files). The only thing that is shared is My Documents but this is a feature of the latest version of Parallels (it maps Pictures to MyPictures, Documents to MyDocuments and so on). Matteo
Hello, please, look through this thread. Please, try the solution from it. Will it work? Best regards, Alicia.
Dear Alicia, no it doesen't, the read only option will be reset and there is no way (in my case) to make it stay unchecked. In any case the problem is related to the "Shared profile feature": disabling it removes the problem. Matteo
In that thread they suggest not to close Properties window while installing. But anyway, thank you for the information about solving the issue by disabling "Shared Profile" - I'll inform our QA team. Best regards, Alicia.
Sorry but: - keeping the properties windows open is really a bad hack: it means that the shares profile feature has serious problems with permissions - I did not solve the issue: disabling a function is not solving the issue (also uninstalling Parallels or not installing the application or switching off the laptop solves the issue ...) - you should not only inform the QA team but report a bug Matteo
it's easy disable your shared folders and then install. You should be able to install fine and then re-enable your shares afterward. to disable/re-enable you should be able to do it from the Devices > Shared Folders > Disconnect All menu options. you can also right click on the small folder icon in the lower right corner of your parallels desktop window. --James
I did this and it worked...I disconnected all devices, after installing I was completely unable to turn it back on even though it says it's on. If you're not okay with that, it's terrible, and if you are, there's your solution.
