Im running Windows 10 as free upgrade from Windows 7 on an iMac with Parallels 12. Now I plan to buy a new iMac and a new Parallels 13 lcense for it. I want to move the VM to the new iMac and not use it on the old one anymore. Do I also have to buy a new Windows 10 license because the hardware has changed or can I thransfer and run it as before?
Hello munum, you can use the same Windows license key on your new Mac as well. In order to use the same Windows license key on your new Mac, please contact Microsoft to make some changes to it. To back up, the old virtual machine, followed as suggested in this article and see if this helps. Thanks!
Thanks for your reply. So as I get it will not work because the free upgrade in 2016 for Win 7 users is limited to the hardware you are using at this time means you can not transfer this free upgrade version of Windows 10 to new hardware. I thougt maybe Parallels is creating some kind of virtual hardware that is not connected to the hardware of the mac itself and is not passthrough to the VM.
The licensing policy is same for virtual and real hardware components. As per Microsoft policy, you can use Windows 7 license key to activate Windows 10 if you are already upgraded Windows 10 in your past and worked with the same license.
