I have been a loooong time Parallels user. And have paid annually for upgrades the past few years. But I'm done. No more subscriptions. And no more paying full price to run Parallels on both my laptop AND my desktop. No discount for a second license??? The crazy part is my company gives me Fusion for free, but I have always preferred Parallels. Not anymore. I'm done getting fleeced. VirtualBox is a better option at this point. Good luck, peeps. Personally I thought the subscription license cost I paid for my systems was very reasonable. I think you need to look at what Microsoft, Adobe to name a few are doing.. They and others are all becoming subscription based. Kevin

I was mainly referring to the subscription model all these companies now seem to use. For me £29 for renewing my Desktop Parallels pro license for a year is not expensive in my opinion. I think you must have taken out the non-pro license or 1 time plan each time. Talking generally about subscriptions - If I subscribed to MS office 1 copy that is £59 for the year. Your example for Adobe is the same as mine for Acrobat but per month.. So a year that is still well over £100 for the year, but I get far more out of Parallels on a daily basis compared to Acrobat which adhoc. I thought the same until I learned the hard way that an update in Ubuntu can make the desktop disappear (Compiz) and Parallels taking weeks and weeks to provide a fix; after it took me weeks to finally have this issue escalated. And this was not the first time I ran into issues with Parallels. And I am tired to play alpha release tester and having to pay for it. Running a bare metal box is cheaper in the long run, especially if 29GBP/year is a non-issue.
If your issues are more than just cost of the S/W and you have specific S/W issues, then I agree these need addressing which is a different matter, If you are still bothered about the cost then maybe you should contact your local sales office for them to explain why you have been charged as much as you have. That said It sounds like you all have made your decision and nothing anyone will say change your minds so good luck with VirtualBox. If it turns out to be bug free let me know as I might be interested although in all my days in IT I've never come across any S/w which does not have its bugs, problems and limitations. Local sales office? I paid online. I had no problem with the cost (at first), would've been happy to pay for years to come; even double the amount. However, I have had more problems with Parallels in one single year compared to running VirtualBox for years (4+). No need to be condescending, I am fully aware of software having bugs. But not all bugs are equal. And not all bugs are handled equal. And if it takes weeks to even reach someone within Parallels to report a bug; something is seriously wrong. The ticket system on the site doesn't work (for me, back then), no idea if this has fixed. I have no problem with changing my mind, but I highly doubt Parallels is going to change its course. Love to be wrong on this, though. I have been happy for most of the time running it. Only the times I wasn't ate too much of my time to justify the cost. Finally, if not paying a subscription means you can't use software at all (especially since any update already breaks Parallels), that's too close to ransomware in my book, and makes me wonder what's next.
